Buying Secondhand ML###

Post by mjw069 » Thu 16 Jul, 2015 1:03 pm

Hi Everyone,

I would be very keen get some advice.

I am looking at buying a secondhand 2010-2012 ML diesel model as a family car which will also be occasionally used to tow a horse float with 1x horse & very rarely two 2x horses. So whatever I buy it will need to cater for that. The estimated weight to tow with 2 horses is 2,300 kgs.

Besides that, what should I be looking for in the car & various models with different engine configs & issues I should look out for etc. They appear to be very well priced for what you get & I love the size, looks & options.

Thanks
Jake

Sorry for the delayed reply Jake.

The era you are looking at don't seem to be plagued with the issues the earlier 163 models had. By the time the 164 was launched MB realised there were markets outside of the U.S. that were a little more demanding on quality, in particular Aust and the package was much better sorted by then. I have not owned a 164 but do have friends that have had or still do, and they love them.
Not knowing your budget or preferences I would suggest either the based on a friends comments who has had 2 W164 diesels.
His first one was the 2009 350CDI AMG MY10 and he loved it. He used to do 45,000k's per year and it didn't miss a beat.
I think the AMG sport option gave you the extras like Nav, power tailgate, airmatic suspension and the 20 inch AMG wheels.

The second one he had was the 2011 MY11 which was the lat of the 164 and are 300CDI with the AMG option on a grand edition which had a lot of the standard features from the soon to be released 166 with daylight running lights, heated seats airmatic etc as standard. These were options on the MY10 164. Plenty available so you should be able to find a colour combo with tow pack for a good price.
As always get a PPI and look for one that has full service history. If you go a 2011 you should be able to pick up a one owner that is prossibly coming off a lease, MB serviced and would most probably have been optioned up. That was how we picked up our 163 originally as it was one of the few with all of the factory options like GPS, tow pack and 7 seats which were rarer ($$$) options at that time.
This 2011 plated 300CDI looks pretty good with the AMG option and is the same spec as my friends.

If you have a budget of $70k plus you can get into a base model but higher K 166 which I can highly recommend

Good luck on your search

Hi Steven,

I really appreciate the reply & the info provided will be invaluable. My wife & I test drove a 2011 350CDI from 3 Points in Fairfield Melbourne on Saturday & whilst we loved the car & the way it drove & ease of parking etc I wasn't overjoyed with the condition for $67k with 70,000 klms on the clock.

I wasn't aware the benefits of the AMG options & the Grand edition but I would prefer to have those options (except the 21 inch rims). My budget is up to $60k drive away and from what I have seen so far I should be able to pick up a 2011 with under $60,000 klms for that price. The link you sent is a fantastic example & one of the preferred colours.

My existing car (2012 VW Passat V6 FSI) has a lease which expires Feb 2016 so only looking to swap over then.

The airmatic suspension concerns me a little. From my experience any car with this sort of trick suspension will require a very expensive overhaul in time. I currently also own a Audi RS4 & the magnetic suspension in that was replaced with more traditional coilovers that cost $5k but if it were replaced with the magnetic variety it would have been $12k (so I am told). Have you heard of any such issues with the MB airmatic set up?

Thanks
Jake

If you do your shopping right the "Airmatic" becomes less of an issue.

I bought 4 corners for a 450GLS from the U.S for under $3,000.00.

OK thanks. Anywhere around $3k is justifiable given the benefits it provides so I will cross that off my list of concerns.

Appreciate the feedback.

Agree I think you should be able to find the right car for your budget. Considering you are not looking until Jan you will have the negotiating power of another year tick over on the MY11
The one you drove sounds very over priced agree with Ivanerrol there are always alternative options that are more economic. I don't believe I have heard of the airmatic a being a weakness in ML's

Very common issue in the U.S. for M.L's, G.L.'s and S class.

They have the luxury of being able to do a turn around on their old air shocks - rebuilds - around $250.00 per side.
The postage charges are cheap.
The U.S. cars use Arnott industries supplied units. The Austrian assembled cars use Bilsteins.

Anecdotal evidence has said that rebuilt shocks are often better than the shocks that come out of the factory.

The GLS I sourced the airmatics for had only done 88,000K's. First the front went then the rears a couple of months later.
We were actually warned to do all four corners at the same time - we would have saved shipping charges.
The shipping charges for the company I used were very strange. If I sent an item weighing 1 kilogram the shipping cost was $100.00
if I sent a package weighing 35 kilograms the shipping cost was $140.00.

Thank you everyone for your comments. Given this, I have now decided on a MB ML for sure over any other manufacturer.

Just to throw a spanner into the works, given I am not looking to buy until Feb 2016, I assume the ML250 (W166) will be into my price range then so the question is would you by a 2011 W164 ML300 CDI or a 2012 W166 ML250 & why? From what I can tell the ML250 is a bare bones package but may offer other model improvements that I am not aware of?

Jake

Time is on your side so I suggest you go and have a drive of a 166. I love my 350 petrol and it has a heap of power and is more like a car to drive than any other SUV I have driven. Remember the ML is a heavy car and you want to be happy that by the time you throw your horse float on it has the torque you need and speak to the dealer about the tow weight. There will be 250's that have been optioned as well but you may find it more difficult to find one with the tow pack option. If I remember correctly I think they were doing some special option models as an entry level push as I think people we're worried about the engine size so they dressed them up with some options so keep your eyes open.
This one is just out of budget and has the tow pack option.

Thanks for taking the time to provide your comments & I'll let you know which road I take.

F.W.I.W.

The 250 is actually a little 4 cylinder 2.2litre with twin turbo's. Not really cut out for carting gee gees on the back or goping over the really rough stuff.
The 250 is more four your city dweller who want's good economy.

If you go to 3 point, do a test drive up Princes street hill from the Chandler highway. Slow down half way up and then put your foot down and see how you go.
I did exactly the same test when buying my W210 back in 2001. I drove a E200 then a E240 up Princes street at the instigation of the 3 Point sales guy - I bought the E240.

Mate has a 250 turbo diesel in his 2014 CLS shooting Break. I'm not overly impressed with it.

Be wary of any M.B. diesel pre late 2013. There are injector issues. This was a recall issue overseas. M.B.A. refuses to discuss it.

I purchased a 2010 ML 350 CDI a year ago. We tow a boat and have towed a 2000kg caravan easily. I was surprised how well the diesel tows. I did not want the air suspension. The regular steel suspension is plenty comfortable. The car had done 53,000km when I bought it and it had all the fruit such as 20 inch wheels, sunroof, electric tailgate, navigation, blind spot warning and so on. What it didn't have I didn't really want, such as heated seats and AMG stuff. Got it with a 2 year Benz warranty and roadside service, brand new tyres and a year's registration for less than $55,000. After a year and 12,000km I have to say that I love this thing. So comfortable, so much room, so much torque. If towing a horse float, I would not get the 300 or the 250. The 350 diesel has 510nm of torque and a 3500kg tow limit. You can still find 350 CDIs with lower kilometres for a pretty good price. I was not in a hurry to buy so I browsed until the right opportunity came up. The price from the Benz dealer was less than a lot of private sellers of vehicles with higher kilometres. The budget would have stretched to a 2011 but I could not see much difference to make the price worthwhile for the k's travelled.

Happy hunting.
