ML 350 2003 W163 Navigation Options

Post by wozzlegummich » Sun 03 Aug, 2014 11:27 am

Just picked up a 2003 ML350 (W163).

Looking at options for Navigation and more importantly a reversing camera. After a bit of research looks like the best path is to retrofit the factory Comand 2.0 system. (Would gladly take advice on other options/ideas).

Trouble is I can't find anywhere to buy/borrow the navigations cd's for Australia. Does anyone have an idea?

My 2003 163 has the Nav command unit. I tried to retro fit TV and Phone however the info I was given when I provided my VIn to a dealer was that my car did not have the appropriate wiring harness installed to plug everything in and it was circa $2500 and I already had the head unit. It might be worth checking as the cost of a unit vs the current resale value of a 163 (unfortunately) I don't believe will be enhanced by keeping it OEM. I can also tell you that the 2003 Nav is not a patch on current navigation functionality (the newer map cd does not improve the software) as it's very first gen old school software and the head unit does not allow for reverse camera integration. There are plenty of options around for navigation units like the alpine and pioneer you maybe better of going aftermarket so you can get traffic updates and 3 d maps. The difference between functionality of my 163 Nav and 166 Nav is like a Cessna and a Boeing Dreamliner.
Good luck with the decision on which way to go.

Also if you are looking for navigation CD updates, our sponsor MBSpares directed me to Soundlabs where I obtained a 2014 version for my 2010 W164.
