Forget the naysayers and the cynics - you have to love the classic appeal of the G-Class. Even if you don't, you still have to respect any model that's able to hold a prominent place in the Mercedes lineup for nearly 30 years. Personally, Mercedes can keep the G-Class in the model lineup for the next 100 years and I'll be more than happy to publish each and every update they make to the industrious SUV.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. For now I have to stick to the changes Mercedes is making to the G for the 2009 model year, and as you can see above, the design changes - while subtle - once again aim to bring the SUV's styling more in line with its younger siblings. Most notably, a new grille featuring three louvres has been added, replacing the former model's seven or so louvres.

Another significant change to the 2009 G-Class is in terms of power for the G500. Thanks to Mercedes' M 273 M55 KE V8, output is boosted to 285 kW (388 PS), while torque is increased to 530 Nm. Power for the G55 AMG increases as well, with total output now weighing in at 373 kW (507 PS).

And finally, the last major changes for the 2009 G-Class are in terms of equipment. New Telematics systems, new wheels and various electronics options are all available to ensure a superb level of luxury and comfort.

Want to see the full list of changes? I thought you might. To do so, you can check out the German 2009 Mercedes-Benz G-Class description, options and pricing list here, but remember: if you live in the U.S., there's no guarantee as to what will make it stateside. For the rest of you, production kicks off in September 2008, so get the checkbooks handy.

When did they stop making them RHD? Have seen late model G's in the UK, but maybe they were converted after they left the factory?

The last RHD W463 (fancy civilian G for the uninitiated) I think was 2001 - the last of those with the W126 styled interior. The post-2002 (W203 interior with free electronic bugs) was only available in LHD until 2007 when it was offered to the English market in RHD.

I was actually just offered a 2007 RHD G55 for a very good price - only problem is I don't want a G55; if it were a G270 for the same price I would have bought it.

Great post BTW - even though I've seen it, many Aussies have absolutely NO idea about G-wagens (see your Toyota Corolla post!).

The way I see Mercedes 4x4's is, you have the M series, something you send your wife to the supermarket in to do the shopping, drop the kids off at the soccar game,
then you have the G Wagen, for the man, to conquer countries, annex land with, occupy foreign territory with

Call me a sucker for V8's - even with the horrible price of 98RON these days....

I'd take a G55 AMG any day.

But a smaller turbodiesel will do -

just add another 10K for the true offroad fun - a proper set of 'Baja Claws in hmmm say 37 inch, some beadlock rims & longer travel suspension for extreme articulation... that'll shut up all those Land Bruisers and P-trolls.
