probably been asked a million times before, but i'd like to confirm - apparently the diesels use the larger din 75 size battery and the tray in the petrol versions will also accomodate this size but normally use a din 65.

Is this correct ?

My 2012 battery is finally refusing to complete a charge on my c-tek smart charger and theres bubbles in the sight glass. Its maintenance free and cant be opened to check water level, I've already tried.

I was under the impression that a Din 88 was the preferred battery for the W124 diesels. It was for the W123 diesels and for the C202 diesels. We had a W124 300D but I cannot recall the battery size when we replaced it. I am sure I would have noted if it was other than the Din88.

From memory Height was an issue. A 77AH battery which fitted into the petrol carriage was too high.

Different manufacturers batteries with the same AH rating or even "DIN" rating are different dimensions.
The Exide DIN 88 has different dimensions to the Varta DIN 88 while the Powercrank DIN 88 is much smaller.

Exide have different dimensions in the same DIN range e.g. DIN77MF vs DIN77MFS etc etc.

I was recently trying to shoehorn a DIN88 Varta into my W204 - just a little big - the Exide DIN88 fitted - just.
The recommended battery for the W204 is the DIN88 - for LHD cars. RHD cars, the AC pipes get in the way and is supplied new with a DIN77

You can go to Every Batteries site and compare dimensions on the batteries they supply.

A follow up to this post - a bigger tray is required for the larger battery, so, not happening....

Also, to my absolute astonishment, I waited another 2 days and tried charging it again and it completed.

Since then it was also used at purchased time of my parts car cranking an m104 for a solid 15 minutes with a later discovered seized fuel pump. It also chanrged up again fine after that abuse too.

It's only some RAC/nrma branded battery too,It just wont die.

Hi Marcel,
bit late to comment, but I just saw your post for the first time and couldn't help but be impressed at those photos - at how clean your car is. Do you eat your meals out of the battery tray! Bit awkward, but it looks clean enough to do it. I am now embarrassed about the state of my car. Perhaps you need to find an Australian Gum tree to park under for a bit to even us up!
