Front seat locks & economy gauge 300CE-24

Post by Brehon47 » Mon 17 Jul, 2017 8:30 pm

I have a 1990 build CE-24v 124. Am I correct in assuming that my front seat locks are vacuum operated (they don't lock when I push the button on the side/shoulder of the seat) ? Is it just a coincidence that my economy gauge isn't working - or are the lines interconnected or centrally operated).
My 124 has 260k showing but is in very good condition - long distance travel is comfortable.
I'd appreciate some advice on tyre size and rim options as the scollop style rims seem oversized and the 205/65x16tyres foul the valances on the front guards when turning sharply and on dips. Brehon

Yes, seat back locks are vacuum operated. The button on the side of the seat UNLOCKS the seat back, so the passenger can alight. The seat backs also unlock when the door is open.
The vacuum gauge on the dash should show manifold vacuum when the engine is running.
With zero vacuum on the gauge and the seat backs not locking, I would also check:
= Is the central locking is working correctly (or is this a model with the electric vacuum pump for CL?).
= Are the air flow vacuum pods changing the airflow when you select air to the windscreen and then change it to send air to the feet?
= Are the brakes working correctly or is the pedal hard?

If all vacuum activated things are inoperative then I suggest that you have a blockage in the main vacuum line from the inlet manifold.

If the brakes are OK but the other vacuum accessories are inoperative then I suggest that you have a blockage in the vacuum off-take in the vacuum line to the Brake booster.

My vacuum off-take broke when investigating a similar issue with my W123 coupe and I replaced it with a brass reducing tee in place of the plastic one from the factory. All my vacuum accessories work well now.

I hope this helps,
Tony

Agree with all that. One of the now cheap vacuum pumps and gauge/ brake bleeder tools (look on ebay) will help you track down the problem by tapping into vac lines and see what holds vacuum and what doesn't

The economy gauge was deleted from June 1990, so there's a chance it may have come with it from factory.

Start at the vacuum source on the manifold and check everything is connected.

As mentioned above, the locks only actuate with engine running and the doors closed, the buttons on the side of the seat need only be used when you need to fold the seat forward with doors closed (I've never had to use mine).

FYI 124s have an electric vacuum pump for the central locking so that system won't be affected. The ventilation flaps for windscreen and footwell are mechanically operated so also won't be affected. Only the recirc flap is vacuum operated.
