Ignition won't turn off

Post by BarringtonBrown » Sat 09 Feb, 2019 9:32 pm

I'm a bit stumped because I thought this might have been related to changing the ignition lock barrel on my E220 TE but that was a separate issue (faulty lock barrel)

When I got home tonight I couldn't turn the car off - turned the key to position zero and took the key out, but the engine kept running.

Removed the lock barrel and played around with the steering lock in case it was one of the connectors with no luck, so I pulled one of the air flow sensors to kill the engine and now it won't restart. I can use a screwdriver to turn the ignition to all positions, but at position zero, all the dash lights are still on.

It was running perfectly all day - what's going on? I've googled the life out of me all afternoon. I did have a fiddle with the wiring harness yesterday and also changed the crank position sensor, but the latter shouldn't be related should it?

I'm not sure about the 124 but on a w126 I changed a barrel and still had trouble. I can't remember exactly but i had to go deeper - maybe the electrical part of the switch..... I just can't remember right now. Anyway, in absence of other replies I just wanted to mention that - something to check out. Just picturing something inside the switch broken and still staying in contact.

Cheers Craig, it feels a bit like it's shorting out somewhere else as when I reconnect the battery the ignition comes back on and I can crank the engine but it won't start.

*edit* Started first time today and runs like a sewing machine, I'm thinking it's probably the wiring harness woes from the monsoon rains we had the other day.
