ventilation fan speed 1 has stopped working...

Post by nxk61q » Wed 05 Apr, 2006 7:19 pm

The slowest speed on the ventilation fan in my '85 (build date) 300E has stopped working, and speed 2 has stopped on a couple of occasions, only to start again after a few minutes when it felt like it. Is it just the resistances in the switch getting past it, or does it portend something more complicated...

The fan goes like hell on the other speeds (3 + 4,) and 2 (most of the time,) running powerfully and quietly.

Has anyone had a similar problem? I know it is an early example of the w124, but it is a blemish on an otherwise immaculate example.

Sounds like you need a new fan switch to me Peter.

Thanks for the switch, John, and the temp. wheel stickers. Easily fitted, and just the job for a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon.

Did the fan switch fix your problem?

I'm still baffled by my fan system on my 1982 W126. Works for days on end, then nothing... for days. Sometimes will just come on by itself if one of the switches is on.
Cheers
Bruce

Yes Bruce, it certainly did, and the fan's behaviour at all four speeds is more measured.

Take the kick panles off that are under the fan, wait for the next time it fails to work and give the housing a good thump. If it starts to work again you need a new motor.

Hi there
been hot up here in Qld still today...
went for a trip and enjoyed the cool aircon.
On restarting the car after 2 hrs the blower would not work under any circumstances. in the 124 E220 94 mod.
fuse is good
my loom seems good in all joints I can see.
will look at switch nect and the conns behind it if i can. The next thing i think of is the brushes...any links re them or getting to them.

Any of your wisdom (esp John Green)
on this is much apreciated, bernie

Make sure there is adequate power getting to the motor before pulling it apart.

I had nothing on number 4, so on dismanteling the switch I noticed the contacts for #4 were worn.

So with a points file and a pair of long nosed pliers very, very carefully reset the contacts.

Has worked like a charm since.
