tacho and cruise

Post by benznut » Sat 19 Apr, 2014 10:43 pm

so, got myself a 300se on the cheap, one annoying thing is my tacho flicks about, can be cruising along nicely when suddenly it dies, cruise goes with it sometimes the idle goes a bit odd but not often, any commonfault areas for these or so i just start checking wire randomly?

I would be suspicious of a fuse making poor (intermittent) contact. I'm not sure what circuits are shared in your car, but in my 500SLC a fuse recently failed that resulted in loss of speedo, tacho, cruise control, blinkers and brake lights.

If these cars use the old ceramic fuses, check that the fuses all have copper coloured fuse wire.
Any which have aluminum coloured fuse wire and/or plastic bodies should be turfed out and replaced with the copper coloured fuses which have ceramic bodies.
The aluminum corrodes and causes intermittent contact with the fuse holder and if the fuse is getting warm from the high resistance, the plastic bodies can soften and even melt, causing even more problems in the fuse box.

If your 300SE does not have this type of fuse, please ignore this comment.

Tony

Don't mean to freak you out but what year is your car? It could be the dreaded biodegradable wiring loom starting to give trouble if it is an early-mid 90s car?

But fuses would be a good place to start first as the others have mentioned.

thanks for the replies guys, it is a 1992 and has blade type fuses, and yes pastelgrey it does still have its crap wiring loom a replacement is in order it seems so i found out on the weekend.
the cruise, tacho and A/C pump are all somehow linked together as when the tacho stops so does the A/C pump.

Replaced the engine loom on Saturday, thanks MB Spares, but upon starting made little difference to my problem.

upon Googling the problem it has come up with a connector X35/7???? anyone know where this is? also something about fuses on the base module.
any thoughts?
