Driver side rear view mirror

Post by stuartm » Wed 22 Aug, 2018 2:44 pm

The mirror glass of an E240 (2004 build) appears a darker colour, (with a brownish hue), than the passenger side mirror. While still usable it also has clear spots on the top and side nearest to the door. Strangely these spots seem to move around but are gradually joining and spreading.
I expect I will have to replace the mirror glass but does anyone know the cause?

You have the auto dimming option, so that at night the reflected headlamps in the image is darker. This is done electronically by charging the liquid film under the mirror glass. The fluid has leaked out and failed, hense it is dark. The replacement glass is big money, you can just order the standard version for much less.

You learn something every day!

I had this option on the interior rear view mirror on my Passat (rest his soul) on which the fluid had also leaked out.
I picked up a 2nd hand mirror from the US for 60 aud.
Worked really great!

But I never heard of an external mirror with auto dimming.

Thanks to John Green, Bartman4800 and Ivanerrol.
You certainly learn something every day.
I knew the internal mirror was light sensing but didn't realise the external was the same.
Thanks again, it explains my puzzle.
Regard
