W213 12V on sun visor

Post by Nickbo »

First newbie post - so be kind ! :
I have just upgraded my old baby to a W213 and love it.
But.
I like to tinker. My first query is whether there is a 12v supply line I can tap into off the rear view mirror/light assembly off the roof ?
In WA, radar detectors are still legal (yeah, I know, slow down, you shouldn’t need one etc) except in WA, I sometimes have to drive 600k just to get somewhere where there’s fuel! To mount on the windscreen I need an accessory line to tap into. Can anyone help ?
And.

The only power close to the RV Mirror is the interior light and that has permanent 12V present.
The only 12V Ign. feed which would be readily available is at the cigarette lighter socket - far from the RV mirror.
Work out how much your detector draws and then determine if that is within your ability and the battery capacity to cater for the permanent draw, or:
Turn it on at the start of your journey and off when you stop.

When it’s fully chirping and carrying on, up to 400mA so I don’t think that’ll be too much.
Don’t suppose you know the colour of said 12v line ? I was hoping to avoid fiddling about with the harness too much.
Cheers

I do not recall, but there are 3 connections to the interior light, Power, Earth (usually Brown but may be a screw into metal) and the wire going to the door switches.
A test lamp or multimeter will identify the power wire quickly.

I suspect with all the sensors in these modern cars, using a power source from an in place light will set off a code.

Are you suggesting that a W123 has sensors (apart from the brake wear indicators) that may set off a code?

No Tony,
but if you get the numbers 1 and 2 and 3 in the correct sequence, you'll find out it's the actual, brand new E-Class :laughing6:

MB produced a world beater car and labelled it the W123. The ctitics and the public raved about it.

40 years later MB installed a bunch of electronics in a car - re arranged the chassis number letters. The critics and public are less impressed.
