W210 Cup Holder

Post by Pcollie64 »

HI all,

I shopped around the many Merc wreckers, letting my fingers do the walking, including our mates at MB spares and there seems to be no cup holders in Australia.
I jumped on eBay and found one for $20.00 (USD) and shipped it was $40.00 Australian dollars... I know it swings toward the driver but I'm cool with that... However, The bl%^dy thing won't pop out by itself and I cannot close the rear lid of the console where it sits.
The cup holder is seated and secure, If you open the console lid (armrest) and wiggle the cupholder, it will pop out. It pops back in ok but you can see its fowling on the back of the the console when closing.

There is no way the wood grain lid will close at all..

This poses a question..

Is there a different console?

I liked the look of these "pop out" cup holders...

Any suggestions?

Regards

The reason why there are no cup holders available for these cars is that if fluid spills down into the area around the gear selector there is a risk that an expensive ECU under there will be destroyed.

Don't under any circumstances let sugared coffee or soft drinks spill down in that area.
Even spraying the area with commercial cleaners has been known to cause issues.

Hi,

I bought a cupholder from MB Toorak 2 months ago for $50 - they had one in stock.
When installing it, I first had the same problem you're describing - it has to go all the way to the back of the tray, and then push it down until it clicks. Once I've done that, the lid started opening/closing properly, and the cupholder ejecting/retracting as it should.

Thanks skorneev,

I'm sure its seated right, I'll try it again when I get back form this trip.

I ripped it out and put the little plastic cup back in after the comment from Ivanerrol.. :)

I'll have another look at it when I get back.

See how you go Pete, if you're in inner south-east I'm happy to help - I bought a 2000 E430 a year ago, would be good to hear of your ownership experience.

Inner south east?

Shouldn't be that far away, I'm in the Frankston area.

I work a lot interstate, currently in Dubbo, and will be in Adelaide and Cairns next week.. Then home finally and I'll give it another go..

Maybe a coffee catch up and compare the E430's.. :)

Just obtained a cup holder!

For those who are interested, part number is B66920101.

Also, included instruction pamphlet indicates they also fit W202's, CLK coupes/cabriolets.

Yes, but only after ensuring the cup holder guides were in their correct position - sitting flush with the recesses.

Thanks for posting the instructions.

Mine seats and clicks into place but the door will not close over it.

Maybe I have the wrong cup holder, its a genuine part, i'll check the part number against the one one you posted.

I was beginning to think the console may be different on the Avantguard... hahaha

Cheers

My understanding is that these cup holders were predominately for the North American market, nevertheless they fit in our W210's here in OZ.

Are you able to close the console lid if you where to remove the cup holder? Perhaps you might have something lodged in the lid's cog wheels, preventing its closure. A vacuum or an air gun might do the trick.

Is you're car the updated facelift model by any chance?

No, its a pre facelift E430 Avantgard.

I tried removing the cup holder yesterday and while it was out I tested the lid, it opens and closes fine.

When inserting the cup holder, It slides in to the top guides and clicks into place at the base, but the console door fouls the front beveled edge of the cup holder.

I have ensured the base of the console is clean, with no obstructions. Got me stuffed.. :wall:

It doesn't appear to be... Everything lines up, doors open and close smoothly and there are no marks on the mounting screws indicating that have been removed at all. Its been there since 1999. :glasses2:

I had another look at it today and when I put the cup holder in, I can hear it click into place at the base, however is still sits a little loose. The holder doesn't pop out without wiggling it as it fowls on the lip at the top of the console. Now that shouldn't happen either. It appears obvious that its not seating correctly. I have tried to get it lower without any luck.

I'm tempted to mill off 1/8 of an inch from the base of the cup holder to see if it makes a difference.. I'll lose the tabs though i'm sure i'll be able to secure it down if it works. But thats a last resort.

Last night I watched a youtube video on replacing the console switches on a W210 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmdiGzMIE9c. The poster had a similar issue and complained that the cup holder was poorly designed and the cup was held in a forward leaning angle, resulting in spills getting into the switch board under the console. His seemed to not lock down properly either.

Just watched that youtube video. Looks to me his cup holder is broken... It only has the one holder and the swivel pin appears to be broken.

For the record, I took off 2mm off the base, and it sat down enough to open and close the lid, but still fowled on the to[ front lip of the console. So I ripped it out, put the little plastic cup thing back in there.

Who needs a cup holder anyway :(

Thanks for all the feedback though.

Years ago I commissioned this - one piece custom coffee holder for my W211 - solid as a rock and matched to the wood trim.
