What is this Antenna for? 230SLK R170

Post by berntd » Sun 08 Nov, 2015 9:27 pm

Hello
There is a small antenna of approximately 75mm on the outside of my car's windscreen. I would love to know what it is for.
Interestingly, my father just bought the same model car (1997) in South Africa and it has the same Antenna in the same place.

This makes me think that this is a factory fitted antenna.

Not sure.
Does anyone here know?

Best regards
Bernt

Hi Bernt,

do you have a photo? I have a R171 and the radio/telephone is at the back of the car. Even an early GPS would be on the trunk lid ...

Hi

Yes, here is a photo.

The Antenna is on the windscreen and has a similar little antenna on the inside, pointing downwards.

Hi,

as far as I know this is an aftermarket telephone antenna, but I'm not the expert on the R170...

This is a telephone antenna (usually has about 300 - 450mm of black painted spring wire above the plastic bit). It is coupled to the bit on the inside of the windscreen which usually has a cable going to the phone holder of the car kit.
The cable on yours may have been cut off or unscrewed and removed.

Nothing wrong with leaving it there, or cutting it off with a sharp blade, then removing the foam and adhesive so your windscreen is clean.

Hello

That is great info. Thanks.

Interesting that this would have been installed in the same place on the screen in 2 different countries.

I 'll probably get rid of it although it looks interesting.

Bernt

That is the preferred location for RHD vehicles - it is almost completely out of the drivers sight.
