Does the side of your chrome bumper come standard like this or did it have rubber bits on the side? I am wondering as it looks very cool if it had rubber bits I am thinking of removing mine to have this very cool effect but if it is standard like this then perhaps not a good idea, email me plz brettheart911@hotmail.com
Buddy, that's a standard 280E/CE bumper bar. The 230E and 300D share the rubber cornered bars, while the 280 got wrap around bars.
Thanks for letting me know:D

Hi isobars,

Congratulations on your 300D.

Your car looks very clean and straight.

I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

What year model is it and how many kms did it travel?

Cheers
Best Regards,

Fitian

Hi,

I'm very impressed with my first 123!

Initially I bought a 116 to import, but the rules changed and the tax went through the roof, hence this local car.

It's South African built, 1981 - according to the papers. Is there a way of being sure? Chassis number finders don't work with SDB123... numbers.

The mileage might be closer to the 119 one the clock than I thought, perhaps you could compare with yours?

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9019

The link will show the pedals and steering wheel.

Cheers,

Paul

My new car in my collection:

1981 (December) W123 280E with 259.000 (real) km on the clock. Only 2 owners till me...1982-1990 a German goldsmith and from 1990 till today a vetenarian .

I just have made a few pics before the car was taken apart to restoration !
Sorry for the bad quality, more will come when the car is finished!

his is my first Benz, a 280TE - purchased in December, 09 and loving it more and more each day. Have found an excellent mechanic in Geelong who takes pride in his work and has the car running like a dream. I still have some work to do on the interior, though it is in great condition for it's age... seats are all perfect but need to replace a few trim items.

Thankz! :)
The pentas are 8x16" ET11 with 205/50-16 tire at front. And rear 9x16" ET14 with 225/45-16 tire. (but this summer i gonna mount spacers for the rear rim, maybe 10mm/side so the ET will be ET 4.)

Have a look at http://www.astralsilber.de/. It's a german site but if you click "Lackierungen/Farbcodes" you'll find the extensive W123 colour scheme.

I believe Betsy is colour code 681 "Weizengelb", which translates as "Wheat Yellow".

Good luck

Don't mean to be picky, but Benz never had that shade of yellow imported into Australia back then, my guess its Maple Yellow code 623....very popular color back then

My 300d is minila beige 681 and it is not as dark as that, your car must be something else, my 240d is code 623 which is light ivory.

I have noticed in your pictures that the 280 has rear head rests is that factory or did you put that in?

My 76 280E, which was advertised as an SE.Having driven 130ks to view the car though i wasnt going to say no because it wasnt the w116 i was hoping for.
350,000ks, And i can only find some rust on the rear floorpan, which isnt critical and the edge of the bootlid underneath is rusty.
I paid $1000 for 'Benny', which i thought was fair. The timing chain and sprockets are noisy. But he drives great, the power is there and the 130k drive home was faultless.

I need a windscreen, so if anybody in the Perth area knows of one available please let me know.

Thanks.

That is a nice example of a 240D, hopefully it has gone to a nice home and not end up on a farm carting hay and pulling plows.
I don't suppose you want to whisper the selling price in our ears. Just to get a reference point as to what very good condition 240D's are making.

Very very nice, so did the updated motor come with a oil cooler as big as the 300d and did the aircon get fitted after it came to Australia?

The update 240D did come with a kinda strange sized oil cooler, and the A/C was factory fitted. The story behind it is a bit strange.

The chap who ordered it was convinced that A/C was not required and insisted it not be fitted. There was much communication between MB and him about how all other Australian spec cars had A/C and how hard it would be to sell when the time came. Anyway they finally agreed to build it with code 625 and no A/C.

But, guess what some how it rolled off the production line with A/C fitted and letter was sent to the prospective owner saying pay up the extra or we will just put it into stock. He paid the extra and the rest is history...

Hi Alex

No, in fact it will depart MB Spares tomorrow (Fri 12) morning, spend one more night in Canberra, then via the Barton Highway, Boorowa, Cowra etc, and the Newell Hwy, make its way (slowly of course) to the Sunshine State :sunny: to arrive in Brisbane on Sunday afternoon (a fellow Benz-owner who used to have a W123 240D offered to fly down to collect it for me).

In fact, you'll never believe it but this 240D has an errand to do on Monday (15 Nov) morning of all places to Samford!!!

And, Hendrik, don't worry, this 240D is in fact going to someone who understands the responsibility of custodianship of fine old things that earlier custodians have looked after well... My 300D (since sold) from the forum sponsor was a cracker. And my former W115 220D (since sold and shipped to the UK) bought via the sponsor in the 1990s was in very fine condition, but not as original as this 240D!

As a violinist :boohoo: , I have many antique instruments and bows much older than this car - and some in mint condition despite the decades...

Price? Well, hunt around the forum, and you'll find that John indicated how much he wanted for the car...

my W123 300D picked up end of 2009, previous owner was in the same family so pretty much one owner from new, (son inhereted it from mother 5 years earlyier)

apart from a cracked dash the interior is perfect, car starts every time and runs excellent,

the front end is a bit vague and there is a bit of vibration at speed, I think the shocks need replacing,

Greetings!
Yet another extremely happy Mercedes-Benz owner over here, you can see this one being driven around Brisbane. After owning a 230e for about a year and a half I have to say it is an amazing car and has given me not much trouble at all.
If I remember correctly, this vehicle was sitting for display at West-Star Mercedes Benz Toowomba for a long time and had two previous owners who both took great care of it.
Installed a subwoofer to go with the aftermarket headunit the dude we bought it off installed, the alternator seized up and had to replace that (a real pain trying to find a second hand alternator that fit), got new front breaks and steering re-aligned. The clock says 271142 but that stopped a little while back along with the trip-meter, getting that looked at as well as another service after uni finishes.

I feel like Matilda is part of the OzBenz family as so many of you across the continent have had 1st hand experience of her. From Tony in WA’s pre sale inspection, shipping to Sydney owners, sale of parts from the forum sponsor and then ultimately her arriving down here. She pops up in all sorts of interesting ways. If I have the lineage right …

I believe PeterMc236 bought her over from Perth and then sold her to Peterac who sold her to Dale who sold Matilda to me, and then my brother took her away.

She is a great wagon, and I really only bought her for a few spares myself, however ... given I had the rusted out 300TD for spares, I thought what great therapy after a hard days work putting her back together. Originally my plan was to use Matilda so I can take the 300CD off the road for an overdue freshen up, but my Brother decided otherwise. Ah well, I'll find another alternative.

I believe PeterMc236 bought her over from Perth and then sold her to Peterac who sold her to Dale who sold Matilda to me, and then my brother took her away.
And for what it's worth, I almost bought Mathilda from Pete Mc. Went like a rocket (well, a 30y.o. diesel rocket). Glad to see her being looked after.

It seems that my PPI was accurate, she seems to be a great car. If only my wife had wanted a wagon . . . .
Matilda would not have crossed the Nullabor.
May she give you long and reliable service.
I am sure that she will be much more economical overall (fuel, service, parts and maintenance) than the depreciation of cars 25 years her junior. (or even just Dealer service on one of those)

Enjoy.!

Finally managed to find a nice 300D, all good so far apart from minor problems such as non working dash lights and an aftermarket rear spring conversion :angry4:

However, minor problems are well outweighed by everything else, 1 owner, 251K, good colour, fully stamped service book with the bulk of work done by MB Ballarat dealers and very smooth and quiet to drive on the highway, well for a 300D anyway.

The real deal maker for this car was the documentation it came with..
Sales brocure, paint colours, MB generic brocure (1977), 300D liftout/specifications...

So if anyone has a paint colour question just let me know!!

Crikey. The U.K. Price for a 240D around 1978 was less than a quarter of that price

Just returned from another run down the freeway to Northern Victoria and back.
Safetycar performed flawlessly on both trips and managed to dodge the locusts :hand: .

Fuel economy seemed pretty reasonable:
- 8.9L /100Km cruising at 95-100Km/h without a/c
- 10L /100km at 110km/h with A/C on full

Here are a couple of early morning photos taken near Benalla

I seem to remember reference to pancake air filters and jelly bean mags with classic Minis, but what are cake tins in MB-speak?

By the way, that is one beautiful car!
Is it a keeper John?
