Front Main oil seal

Hi all - Have referenced this site on many occasions, for odd jobs, with great results - thanks to all who post info.

My 1982 280TE has given me a few headaches over the past two years of my ownership but I've persevered and have a relatively sweet running wagon.

My past master tasks have been the vacuum operated central locking and the SLS - both now conquered .

Next on my list is the leaking front crankshaft seal for which I have now collected, what I think, are all the necessary parts including what seems to be the main problem most times - the pressed on collar inside the seal.

I see that the nicest way to do this job would be to use MB tools but they look pretty rare and very expensive. Has anyone out there got the puller that would clamp around the collar to extract it. I'm also after a flywheel locking device of some sort as 400ft/lbs and the big bar are going to test me.

No rush to tackle this job and really happy to liaise with anyone who may offer some guidance. I'm based in Sydney.

take a look at my coupe to road thread. I changed the front seal in that twice.

Hopefully there's some good information in there that can help :)
