Fuel Pump Relay location...help!

Post by BradA » Sun 14 Jan, 2018 4:05 pm

Hi all,
I've got a late model 280E (Aug '84) that has decided to refuse to start. Spins on the starter, but not a single pop from the engine. First diagnosis is that there's no power at the fuel pump with the ignition turned on, so my next step is to jump the 87/30 pins on the fuel pump relay to see if power is restored. Unfortunately, try as I might, I just can't find the FPR!

Much google searching suggests it's behind the passenger footwell cover, and there are two boxes that look like relays behind the hatch there, but neither has '6 cyl' or maximum rpm printed on it.

A couple of posts on the forum suggest a couple of different locations, one between the glove box liner and the A pillar, and the other up against the firewall on the driver's side, but no such luck with my machine.

Any suggestions?

cheers,

Brad

I also am having starting problems with my W123 so have been playing with fuel pump relays. When you remove the trim to left of the passenger footwell, it is the one the smaller one a bit behind the long one. It also sits a bit further out.

Thanks Lance. This is what's behind the cover in the footwell in my car. The upper relay (on the right in this image) has a 4 pin connector, the lower a 6 pin connector. Does this look like what you have?

No that is different, I don't believe either of those is the fuel pump relay, someone else will need to answer your question.

Brad,

This is a photo of my 280CE passenger floor and the fuel pump relay is behind the blue and green wires at the very top left of the photo, in the recess behind the large left plastic footwell cover. Sorry this was taken some time ago to show the floor and not the relay, but hope it helps.

We picked the car up this morning and guess what? It started after being rolled off the tow truck... Ahh my favorite type of problem, one that not there when I look at it... My bet is still on the fuel pump relay.
