Recently my red charge indicator lamp began staying on after starting, and progressively longer each start.
It usually went out with higher revs.
I suspected the voltage regulator but before I could check it, the battery died.
The battery was 4 1/2 years old so was at the end of its life anyway.
I was able to get a Beru voltage regulator from my neighbourhood parts shop straight away.
Problem solved, I thought, but the new battery wasn't charging...
Auto electrician replaced the bearings in my 55A Bosch alternator identifying the worn down brushes of the voltage regulator as the cause of the bearing damage.
Make sure you replace your regulator in time.
