W123 Coupe Sunroof seal kit

Post by RA28GT » Thu 21 Sep, 2017 9:13 am

Hey guys,

Picked myself up a W123 280CE.

Previous owner sealed the sunroof shut with silicon (facepalm) because it was previously leaking. Ive since removed and silicon and got the sunroof functioning well again. What I'm chasing now is a sunroof seal kit to seal it all back up, I found a couple online but they did not suit the Coupe's electric sunroof. Can anyone point me in the direction of a new kit? Cheaper is better to be honest I don't mind running non genuine. Can I just get the generic front and rear seals to suit?

I don't know the answer but will chip in with a suggestion. I have heard that some sunroof seals are getting very hard to get. I would call the dealer with your VIN and ask for a quote. If they tell you it is no longer available it will help get your thinking on track - also ask them for the part numbers that you can then put into a google search and see what comes up.

But others may have first hand experience with your car and seal.

Try both the Forum sponsor and also Mercedes Source in the USA.
I bought my set of coupe seals from the US about 2 or 3 years ago.

First check the cassette the sunroof slides in - It has drain pipes at each corner which block. Then the tray (outside of the cassette) rusts and you have your leaks.

I have replaced my cassette but these are getting uber rare to get a good one, and they are unique to the coupe (smaller sunroof). I bought all the seals and rubbers from MB Spares but that was a few years ago.

You may end up having to repair the tray (and possibly removing it). Its a bit of a job as you will need to peel back the roof lining to get to the tray in situ. From there you can work out if you can repair in or out of the car.

i got this for my 280CE W123 1979. However, i just got it because they were getting difficult to find, never needed to install it so i can't say whether it fits.

I recently bought front, rear and side seals for my wagon sunroof from the forum sponsor. Not sure if they are the same being a manual sunroof as opposed to an electric, but I would start there.

Sometimes, the drain pipes in the corners rust so the hoses won't attach securely.

TSharkey, what did you do about all the sponge, padding etc that goes on the cassette?

Hi Greg - That sticky foam on the outside ?

I re-used some of it and got some more from Clark Rubber to deaden the roof sound.

Thanks Tim. So, just an easy DIY with the help of Clark R.

Well... Lifting the cassette into position, with gooey seal on the mounting frame nearly wore both my son and my arms out ... and getting the roof lining to slot back in was time consuming and there is a specific order to get the tensions right which I can't remember but is the reverse of how you unpick it. But all up, within my skill set which is very much in the amateur DIY category.

I don't have a coupe but I have fitted non genuine rubber seals and side brushes to my 203e sunroof and would advise to go genuine if possible, the cheap ones are crap rubber and or don't fit, the cheap ones do not last long..the sort of disposable philosophy one avoids with a merc.

save your pennies and do it once and do it well!
