power steering pump rebuild question?

Post by 230ew123 »

Now I would like someone to translate this to plain English please..

"Note: Install slotted bushing in such a manner that the slot is located opposite to pulling direction of V belt."

Quoted from 300d 1985, power steering pump service, fsm, chassis, starkeinfo cd2.

I can only imagine they mean the arrow which is stamped on the elliptical bush housing ring. Does mean concisely that the arrow points in the direction opposite to the direction of the pull of the v belt?

Anyone?

That quote is from page 8 from this link..

The only reference to the direction of the v belt pull I can find...

(I shall do some bench tests before installation anyway, it would just be nice to understand what they write)

If the slot is in one end of the vane holder, perhaps that slot must be at the non-driven end of the driving shaft.

Does that make sense? If the slot is in both ends of the vane holder then I do not understand what they mean.

I love that my car was made in 1984 in reference to Orwellian double speak, just like the ministry of love is not exactly that. Now we have the secretary of state being exxon..(I wonder who's interest and concerns his lie in..)

If 2 clever experienced fellas can't clearly tell me what it says, well. I read it several times and still am puzzled..glad I am not the only one!

I am going to bench test the pumps by getting some pump hoses from the wreckers and connect the pulley nut to a drill, clean bucket and some dexiii. Settle it for once and all and confirm with clear pictures.

If anyone enjoyed Pirsig's 'zen and the art of motor cycle maintenance', a motorcycle mechanic, Crawford, wrote a follow up book called 'shop class as soul craft', an excellent book, a philosophical approach of why a good mechanic finds the cause of a problem rather than a quick fix, among many other issues of mechanics...before even touching tools.

Crawford also spent a period as a technical writer, 'how to do so and so' in the driest of terms, not always necessarily being legible, just deadlines. Unsurprisingly, his co-worker was shooting up heroin at work in the booth besides him, so bored out of his mind without real meaning..

Without looking at a drawing I would say it has to do with the forces:

The pull of the V-belt generates a side (radial) load in the bearing bushing.
If you mount that bushing with the slot away from the radial force, you have the full half circumference of the bushing to take that force.

If not, your surface area is decreased by the area of that slot.

Makes sense?

Thank you Bartman! It ended up that I was looking at the wrong section, it is the next section in the fsm (assembly doh) which clearly states the arrow slot is places towards the back section of the pump.

Sorry all for my stumbling questions, makes a world of difference to have access to a fsm, little bit less guess work. Very patient with me.

Interesting though, the elliptical housing does look identical on both sides..

Hope the floods are ok in WA..

No floods here, only in the Swan Valley.

I live in a house on stumps, about 5 meter above the bottom of my sloped street.
No problems here. Most of the soil drains extremely well here (it's just infertile sand), except for the Swan Valley....
