BBQ in Brisbane for Ozbenzers Sept 21

Post by drew56cus » Wed 20 Aug, 2008 10:09 pm

Ok, looks like we will have another Ozbenz get together for the SE QLD'ers/N NSW'ers. CraigB is coming up from Sth Oz so we should try to get together and see the faces behind the keyboards.

WHEN: Sunday 21 September, say 10am to 2pm
WHERE: Kenmore, Brisbane - about a 20 minute drive south-west from the city centre, tucked in behind Mt Coot-tha

So who is up for it? Let's see, who have we got?
CraigB. Carl (W123 wagons). Paolo/Bahnstormer 109 (many cars to choose from). Gordie/Ozbenhead (far too many to choose from). Russ. 76Benz. Bob/handaus, you can bring that lovely pagoda along! Dean with his finnie convertible project. There are some guys on the goldie too aren't there (Ross/420 SE is there now aren't you?) Come on up.

So give me an indication of who may be interested, so I can organise a few snags and drinks. I will need a head-count a week before the event so that I can prepare, and figure out how many brownie points this is going to cost me!!

Cheers, Drew

21st Sept....will be there! :D

Does that mean I must have a wagon roadworthy? Can a Golf be classed as wagon? Any Foulcans allowed?

dark mutterings about broken springs in seat bases, power steering pumps, broken glovebox lids, clattering valvegear, 000 aerials, door check straps, K-Jet air leaks.....

Hi Carl,

Will be good to see you. A bit off topic, but I had a bit of a seat base experience. I had a receipt on the 116 for a new seat base but it seemed a bit high and I have trouble seeing all the instruments. So I got another seat out of a wreck to check. On stripping them both, I found my new base had a 126 part number and I thought I found the problem, even though both seemed very close in dimensions. A call to the stealership showed the part number was correct after all. So in your search for parts, if a 116 base fits, a 126 will too I guess. Another point that may be of use, the one out of the wreck had a broke spring but they repaired it by wiring in a couple of old circular/spiral lounge chair springs - available from your nearest dump no doubt. I would never have picked it though in its upholstered state and it felt quite comfortable and well supported. Hope something here helps!

Just following up with some details on my Queensland visit next weekend. I fly in Friday 19/9 at 10.50 and my first commitment is Saturday. I imagine most people are working Friday. It is possible for me to do a tour of the PWR factory on Friday, followed by dinner, so that may be what I do and catch up with the state reps. I am looking for a pre78 traytop 4wd ute though, so if I can find something to look at, that is another option. Saturday is flat out though but look forward to catching up on Sunday. 10am to 2pm is it? I am staying at Mercure Hotel, 85-87 Quay Street Brisbane and I have no idea what is entailed in getting to Drew’s and to the airport for the 5.35pm flight back to Adelaide. Doesn't sound far though and a taxiable distance. If someone is passing through I might be able to grab a lift. look forward to meeting you all.

kenmore to airport is a 45 min minimum taxi ride - about 60 bucks average.

from the city - milton rd, western fwy, moggil rd exit, follow moggil rd to kenmore roundabout. from there, it's either brookfield rd / moggil rd or kenmore rd (not sure where Drew lives) about a 30 dollar cab, plus or minus a bit.

Might be best to give Drew a call, and perhaps someone heading through the city can pick you up on the way out?

Ok guys, am now coming out of hibernation (due to work), so I will start getting organised.

Craig, I will scoot in to the city on Sun morning to pick you up. I will probably have people lingering still late on sunday, so I probably can't get you to the airport though. But Joe is right, $60 cab fare or we could drop you to the train station to get a train there (cheaper but takes longer). Pity you are not going on mon morning as my wife flies out then too!

My place is in Bielby Road Kenmore Hills , which is off Moggill Road. I will PM people my phone number during the week (I assume I shouldn't put it in the general arena, Joe?? Are there freaks out there that will do something bad??).

I will provide some beers, soft drinks, and some food, so just bring your cars.
Parking will be anywhere around my place - there is a lot of room off the side of the road, and it is a reasonably quiet road.

Cheers,
Drew

I know EXACTLY where you live. hahahaaa

20 years ago, we used to use 'the back road' as a racetrack. but Fleming road was still a dirt track where the shops are, and Iron bark and goolman never met up.

When I come up next, I'll give you a buzz, and we can catch up. My old place is within walking distance. :)

Hey Ross,

how is the damage control? is it pretty bad?

Just thought I'd ask if there was any update. Hope it is only the tensioner rail and not anything worse.

The new guy did not get back to me on Friday, but I feel deep down there are bent valves for sure, I am being very hopeful there are not cracked pistons - but the noise was pretty awful

If he does not call me by midday monday, I will be calling him to see what the go is.

Given how far I have to drive to work being left with one car between us just will not work, I need to know how long this is going to take to sort.

It's weird, I was looking at a 420 engine on ebay a couple of weeks ago that went for just over a grand - an out of car top end and chain overhaul may have put it at less than this will wind up costing.

Ok, here are the details guys.
Address - XXX Bielby Road Kenmore Hills - note that it is a big long road, as there is a short road with a similar name nearby
Ph - Drew on XXXXXXXX
Time - around 10 till 2, or whenever people leave. I will start cooking around 12-12:30.
What to bring - yourselves, some good humour, maybe a fold up chair. I will put on a BBQ, some soft drinks and beers.
Other - you must not mention anything about how long my projects are taking, or the number of projects accrued!! And you must tell my wife that you all have 7 or 8 cars in your yards too, and your wives are fine with it...

Some will be able to park on the driveway, and others on the road in front of the house, on either side of the street. You can park on the mulch - it is just a layer to stop the soil eroding, there is nothing planted in there. I will put the Cherry finny out the front to guide you all in.
Bob,I will save a spot in the car port for Snowy (though it means I will boot jackies car out).

I can help you out there Drew - I have 15 cars, 5 motorbikes (one sidecar) and when I took my wife to see the last car she told me to buy it! But she will never believe the truth - maybe I need to tone it down a bit and lie!!

Thanks for the offer of the lift Drew. I will say my goodbyes to the crew at breakfast, and then they head off on a bus tour at 8:30, so any time after that let me know. You have my mobile.

Thanks for coming guys!
The roll call was quite impressive:
CraigB who was up on a trip
hands_aus in his lovely 250SL pagoda
Carl with his 280TE wagon
bahnstormer109 in his 300SEL 3.5
420SE sadly with no 420SE!
simonsend rumbled up in his rangie whilst the convertible project is still under way
Ozbenzhead in Boris the W116 (with another interior for my projects!) Gordie - can you post some pics??
Gordies mate Robert in an 300SEL 6.3
And a mate RonB in his 6.3 also.
Much looking under bonnets, looking at panels, and waffling on about cars and other things. The time went way too quickly. So much knowledge in one little group.

It was particularly great to hear the M100 6.3's in action. And now there is a lovely great big black strip up the road that will bring a smile to my face for months, as a tribute to stonking big V8 torque!!

MBCNSW concours was a fantastic day out also today, and many people were in attendance. Sadly it is a bit difficult to get down from qld & vice versa for these events, but it's good to see the same spirit exists..

would love to see some Bielby road action again, I remeber using it for a racetrack for many years in my misguided youth :D

Would be interesting to hear what the area was like before it got all developed. And what was around before the western freeway.
And yes, people still do use it as a race track at times, as we are right near a valley with good visibility, so people fang it.
My wife is used to me running to the road side of the house whenever I hear a V8 winding up!

Extra big thankyou from me to Drew and Jaquie for putting on such a great show. If ever your travels bring you down this way I hope to be able to return the hospitality (wine region trip maybe?). And great to meet everyone and being able to put a face to a name..... or as I asked "but what's your 'real' name"! I certainly picked up some knowledge and so much easier when you can point to things rather than trying to describe it on here.

Thank you to Bob for the lift across to see a 170s and then to Alan for the last leg to the airport. It was a good solid (but stripped) 170s, so will be good to see another of those live again. By chance Alan will be in Adelaide this weekend to there will be some comparisons done and I will try and line up a test drive in another 170s, nothing like that to spur you on!

Interestingly, I got to the airport without a minute to spare and got confused by the fact there was a blue and a red gate 25. Consequently I went through the Virgin blue security who firstly took the 'spiderman web fluid' aerosol from a toy I bought for my 4yo (I didn't know it was in the box let alone what the rules are about aerosols). I was cool about that except they didn't need to treat me like a terrorist for doing so! But then they got hung up about a couple of plastic lenses and headlight I picked up from Drew (Yes Drew did know I took them!!). The head security 'bitch' said to me "forget it" and when challenged she said they would have fuel etc. on them so I told her on that basis she had no idea what she was talking about and demanded to talk to someone above her and that's when I realised that virgin have different security to jetstar. So I grab my stuff and head to jetstar, by this time wondering if I was gonna make this flight. They are set up with a nice sign telling you to put phones and aerosols into a seperate box before you get there and I put the aerosol in there and pointed out to the security person that maybe it needed to go straight in the bin. With smile she said just put it in the box and I checked again at the other side if it was OK and no worries ( i mean it is a pressurised cabin and all that and it didn't actually explode and I didn't use it to try and tie up the pilot and take over the plane...... yes it is a toy and as hard as he has tried even my 4yo can't swing between buildings with this stuff!!) They did thouroughly check my bag and seemed to be genuinely trying to see how an Americana light could be used as a terrorist weapon, but all done with respect and the head guy used common sense and gave the nod.

So I know this probably comes down to individuals having a bad day, but when you have close competitors and you are looking for a reason to choose one over another, this sort of stuff sticks in your mind.

I was up in Brissy for the Australian Historic Motoring Federation AGM (which is probably best described as the peak body for the traditional 'old fart' clubs across Australia). It was an interesting meeting contrasting opinions at the meeting of some trying to control what others are doing and taking concessional registration schemes (which in my opinion are there to cover for road tax and insurance but in a more equitable way because you are rarely using the car on the road and therefore should pay less) and using them to hold enthusiasts to ransom trying to affect how they restore their cars etc. etc. and some, not all that is. But still, quite a contrast to just simply getting together on Sunday to have a great time, minimal organisation, no beauracracy, no arguing, just a good time for all. I have said it before but I think the forums are the clubs of the future and this weekend just confirmed that for me. If clubs don't start taking the attitude to be 'inclusive' of the range of opinions and the sort of things a range of people want to do and stop this 'exclusive' if you want to play it will be by our rules attitude, I am sure they will die.

So after all these negative tones, I really did have a great time and look forward to catching up again. Perhaps a Victorian Rendevous as discussed?

(and apoligies for mispelling all the French words!)

very valid and interesting point.

Good to see that OZBENZ members heads are screwed on properly and 'we' are going in the right direction though :)
