Sydney based OZBENZ Members catchup

Post by thirstymerc » Fri 29 Apr, 2011 10:07 am

Hi all,

I was talking to Mark (Dr. Know) the other day and we thought it might be great to have a Sydney OZBENZ meet up and put faces to forum names and have a couple of beers and talk Mercs

Exactly where and when is open to suggestions, but I thought I would get the ball rolling and see who is keen and when suits others?

A couple of thoughts were we have a BBQ somewhere like Centennial Park in the heart of the city (or any park really) or meet at a pub on a Saturday arfternoon somewhere which is convenient for everyone.

So I guess now is to find out who's keen, suggestions for where to have it and if there is a weekend which would work for everyone?

Obviously if other members outside of Sydney would love to come, than that would be fantastic, so the more the merrier!

So thoughts and a show of hands?

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Sounds like a great idea. I do hope you get a good response from Ozbenz members.

I tried a similar idea for a meet and greet for coffee on Sydney's northside earlier in the year for W126 owners in the local area (later expanded to all Ozbenz Merc owners).

Unfortunately, all I received was some personal abuse from one Ozbenz member (interstate would you believe) and no takers. I think your idea for a central meeting location such as Centennial Park or similar may have more luck

I would be more than happy to come along and say hello to fellow Ozbenzers.

Regards,
Kim

I'd be up for that.

If people are up for a little drive, the Otford Pie Shop in Otford is a great place to stop. Plenty of parking, nice scenery and decent food.
Cheers,
Michael

I was thinking Centennial Park might be good as we can snag a bbq and some chairs.

Another place I thought might be great also would be the German/Bowling Club in Tempe opposit the station there.

It has ample parking for all the cars, fantastic german food, coffee and great german beers on tap and seems only fitting really

I know the German folk there would get a kick out of seeing all the Mercs if we can get a few there too

Cheers

That'd be great, but unfortunalty I won't be eating there. The beer was great but I think I got salmonella from the food.

It really is a cool place though..

Yep, I'm in, as long as everyone brings some tools so that they can fix any of the myriad problems that I create for myself. I live in Katoomba, so it's a big drive for me wherever we go - unless we go to Katoomba...

Good German beer and plenty of parking sounds good to me!
Tempe not too far out of the way, either.
Centennial Park also fine.

Saturdays are basically out all winter, tho.

I didn't know it was there, but yes, the drive through the park could be a good idea.
Or if the majority prefer Tempe or wherever, I could be tempted along too,
Saturday or Sunday is ok, but would need plenty of notice, a couple of weeks at least.
Maybe get a couple of other 'southerners' to convoy up the F6?

Yes, it's Otford in the National Park, not far from where the hangliders and parasailers jump off cliffs.

Here's a pic taken from the Pie Shop. My 230E behind my mate's 420SEL. :)

Well sounds like we are getting there with a venue.

I do like the thought of the German Club in the chance there might be rain (covered outdoor area) and the whole German experience, and I have heard the Pork Knuckle is fantastic with a good larger :occasion5:
P.S - Ed, hopefully it wasn't the Pork Knuckle that you ate! I've had good reports from mates who frequent the place, so hopefully the incident was a one off.

Perhaps we see how this one goes and lock in the next one for Otford?

In case Saturdays are pretty busy for people, may I suggest an upcoming Sunday towards the end of this month or early June?

Would that work for everyone?

The Club hours on Sundays are:
Bar: 11am till late
Restaurant: 12pm - 3pm & 5.30pm - 8.30pm

Dweezil - I'm happy to drag what tools I have along, but don't expect me to know what to do with them...lol :happy3:

It would be great to finally meet up with a few members and chew the fat.

Hopefully we can get some numbers along.

Also a professional photographer mate of mine is keen to come along to as he loves the Mercs, so if anyone is up for some free professional car shots, now is your opportunity!

I'm excited Big Kev style!

Cheers

The German Club sounds gut. It seems a pretty central location for most of those interested in attending. So why not?

Just a suggestion, why not arrange it for sometime in June so that it gives people with families (so that they can escape) plenty of time to plan ahead.

Ed can be the official food taster!

I love it when a plan comes together!

Well what about we go with the date of Sunday June 5 for a 12pm kick off?

Does that give everyone time to free up that day for the get together?

It looks like we are getting a few of us there, so I can also book a large covered outdoor section for us to hangout in.

Can't wait to see all the gathered cars! I may have to actually polish mine again soon for the day

Even though there will be plenty of jobs I should be doing instead, I would enjoy a get-together (assuming it doesn't clash with something important like a classic rally!).

Given that this will be a first time meeting for many with a common interest, namely our Mercedes-Benzes, most will want to spend time discussing and studying that common interest. For this reason, and without wanting to discourage an indoor venue if that's what everyone wants, may I suggest a venue where we can socialise and move around the cars. The logical choice would be an outdoor venue such as a park with plenty of room for everyone to park their cars.

An indoor venue is fine when you already know everyone and what they drive, but possibly not the best choice for a first-time gathering. It would be a bit silly to choose an indoor venue only to end up spending all our time in the car park, or worse, spend all our time indoors and not actually get to look at the cars! When wanting to meet numerous new friends, an indoor sit-down setting can be less than ideal.

Obviously a park doesn't provide the catering convenience of indoor establishments, however, depending upon time of day, there are still options including a BYO picnic or barbecue lunch, takeaway food if that is close by, or just morning or afternoon tea. A park is possibly also more suitable for any who need to bring younger kids along.

I agree that to make it fair for all, it would be good to choose a central location, or at least one central for the majority wishing to attend. I must admit though, I would much prefer a location with plenty of space out of the chaos of the city, even if it means driving further (preferably on the open road). Whilst I live in the northern suburbs, I would prefer driving to somewhere like the suggested Otford location well to the south, simply because it is further away from the traffic congestion of the city (and for the drive through the Royal National Park).

On the other hand, if a fairly central metropolitan location is desired, may I suggest somewhere like either McIlwaine Park (or Brays Point Reserve) at Rhodes, or Silverwater Park at Silverwater. These parks offer plenty of off-street parking, and are on north-south ring roads not far from the east-west M4, providing reasonable access from most suburbs and areas outside of Sydney. If either of these locations was chosen, we would need to check that another large event hasn't already been arranged there.

I really don't mind Greg, happy to do whatever. I thought the German club might be good as it has a big outdoor parking area on site in front of the bowls greens there away from traffic and cover in case it does end up raining, but understand if others wanted something more out in nature. I guess it would be good if where ever we go does have some sort of cover to retreat to in case of bad weather and some food around.

I think Greg has a good point. If we can be somewhere undercover - in case it rains - and close to the cars would be fantastic. What about this place in Otford? Would that offer something like that? It sure is a beautiful drive to get there, so just for that reason everyone should come along!

The Pie Shop does have indoor tables, but the place and the drive are definitely best enjoyed on a nice day when you can sit outside and take in the view of the ocean and of course the cars.

Sounds good. Well how about we meet up at Otford Pie Shop from 12pm onwards on either Sunday May 29 (as a couple have said they might not be able to make June dates) or Sunday June 5?

If this works for everyone and the Merc gets a good run out of the city, then I say we lock it in?

I'll go with that, either date is ok so far, but I will need confirmation soon, we are alwys busy.
I agree with Greg's suggestion, if this is a first, let's get some outdoor action going and fix the lunch dates later.
Parking with a pie, should work better than a restaurant with parking.
Also, as everyone is fairly spread out we will need to cover different regions over time, but again, as long everyone has enough notice, that should work ok.

As far as the weather goes, I wonder if many (or any) would bother going if the weather was miserable? Perhaps those wanting to attend should check the forum on the morning of the event if the weather is questionable.

As far as dates go, May 29 doesn't suit me however, at the moment, June 5 would be OK. I am aware however, that for at least one other, the reverse is the case.

Is it worthwhile if all those interested in attending (at the suggested location) post dates over the next few months that DO NOT suit them? By looking through a list of these dates that don't suit, we can hopefully find a date that does suit everyone, or at least the majority who are interested.

I just found out that I am "on stand-by" during the weekend of 5 June, as such 29 April has my preference, but could endeavour to make it if we decide for 5 June.

Those who are scared of a few drops of water should leave their precious hair-do's at home.

For those wanting to do the Otford run, I'd suggest a better venue is Sublime Point. It's just a little further down the road, affords a good relaxing meeting point. Thats not to say don't stop @ otford, but rather leave some options open.

Suggestion: meet @ Heathcote train station carpark, then travel down through the RNP to Otford via waterfall. This gives you the best part of the bitumen run through the RNP, to otford.

Optional Icecream & coffee from the van @ Bald knob. (hang gliders spot, just up the road from otford)

continue up lady wakehurst Drv to the old pacific hwy, left @ helensburgh roundabout and down to Sublime pt. plenty more parking space and much better views. better if you bring a folding chair or picnic blanket., it's a picnic area but you cannot guarantee seating availability.

option for northerners is to come via M2 M7 M5 heathcote rd or down the ED through gen holmes drv brighton, presidents av kogarah, onto princes hwy through sylvania, sutherland, engadine and pull up @ heathcote.

It's an easy drive. 63km from Nth Syd. via ED.

Joe is a local and knows the area well, and I agree with his suggestions. I would however suggest you substitute the Old Princes Highway for his suggestion of the Old Pacific Highway, as that would see you in completely the wrong place!

My suggestion of a rethink should the weather fail us, is simply that some with nice weekend cars may not want to get them dirty unecessarily. For me, nice weather could see the 500SLC venture out, whereas wet weather would mean the daily driver 190E-2.3 Sportline (which with its manual box would still be an entertaining drive through the National Park). It's not that the 500SLC isn't allowed to get wet or dirty (that seems to be happening at just about every classic rally these days), it's just that I prefer not to get it wet or have to wash it more often than necessary given the reputation 107s have for rust!

Assuming we haven't a firm date as yet, I'll get the ball rolling with the dates that don't suit me over the coming months. Hopefully if everyone else does the same, we can come up with a date that suits the majority. Sundays that are unsuitable for me are May 15 & 29, June 12 & 19, and July 10.

For my part, Joe's route sounds ideal, (I may still stop for a pie in Otford though) ready for a coffee or ice cream stop at Bald Knob, and Sublime Point is just that, with or without eating.
I'll risk the weather, the SLC usually only goes out on sunny days too, but if a date is set and it rains, tough, I'll be there.
As for dates, most weekends are ok as long as I can plan at least a week or two ahead.
Then we are ready for a northern run, I suggest take the old hilly road north of Hornsby to 'Pie In The Sky' on the mountain overlooking Brooklyn.

Now that one will be the Old Pacific Highway. Another good suggestion. It sounds like this could become a somewhat regular event.

Another event we have previously tried to turn into an OzBenz member get-together is the annual Shannons German Autofest and MB Club ACT concours. It is a well worthwhile event every September and an easy drive for those from Sydney and south-eastern NSW. Some even make the journey from Victoria. As John Green states, Canberra is the centre of the known universe! Keep it in mind.

All sounding good!

So Greg, if 29th no good, is June 5 possible for people?

But if we can get more numbers by holding it on a later date (say July) so everyone can get their itinerary in order if need be.

Its sounding like a big meet up and drive which is great, so if there is the opportunity to get as many people there as possible and make an event of it, then should we just nominate a date further out so hopefully it won't clash with alot of members existing plans?

With that in mind, whats the best solution to confirm a date as we are throwing a few around.

Perhaps we just say a date, and if you can make it great and if you can't then come along to the next one?

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Cheers

Whilst May 29 doesn't suit me, it appears to suit a couple of others who have mentioned dates. We need all those interested to list dates over the next few months that don't suit them to hopefully come up with one suitable for the majority to guarantee a good roll-up. Otherwise, as Steve suggests, a date will just have to be chosen and if some can't make it then they'll have to wait until next time. I've listed the dates that don't suit me but if one of those suit the majory, that's fine, I'll just try for the next get-together. Get your list of dates in everyone.

I am fine for the rest of May and June as long as I get enough notice before something else gets booked in, EXCEPT June 12th which is the date of the 'Motoring Expo' at the Motorlife Museum at Dapto - unless of course anyone on this run to Sublime Point wants to run another twenty minutes south as it is was a good do last year with afew Mercedes on show too.
Other than that, I have a date at Eastern Creek for All Fords Day on July 31st, of no interest to Mercedes folks but as editor of the Model T Club mag' I have a duty to report it.
So any except June 12th and July 31st for me.

Just to throw a spanner in the works ... I'm good for May, but the first three weekends of June are definitely not possible.

I should be right for any other dates after that.

Here's a torque wrench to add to the spanner.... need to tighten things up around here.

How about Next Weekend then?

and if people can't come, they can't come. Simple. we just do another one again next month -

Make it a regular opportunity and leave your attendance details in a reply on the thread.

Sounds like this is going to be the only way. We're crazy if we think we can make a weekend where everyone will come.

But the idea of making it regular sounds really great. I'm in for next weekend if anyone else is?

Weather is looking good too - Saturday or Sunday?

Suggestion is for Saturday, rather than Sunday -

Unless you want to contend with the myriad of D******D tourist drivers now frequenting the "Grand Pacific Drive" - a wise suggestion is to AVOID. Today alone there were two accidents on the corner just up the road due to careless tourist drivers.

Why they choose Sunday to be a thoughtless braindead FW is beyond me.

So yes, for the sake of safety I do suggest Saturdays. and time - well to be honest it is much better in the mid morning until about 3 pm which will give you the times when there is the least traffic and the opportunity for a good clean run without too many tourists or inattentive drivers.

I reckon a 1030hrs meeting time @ Heathcote will allow the late risers time to get there from the northside, but we can square this off in the next couple of days with some consensus.

My philosophy is that it will give people time to get home and still have an afternoon to get stuff done (GSD). If we do this on Sunday, apart from the idiot traffic, relaxing on the way home becomes frustration in traffic.

Keep in mind: northbound traffic on Sunday afternoons on the F6 up to Heathcote can get nasty on some weekends. I have seen it gridlocked from heathcote rd intersection right down to Appin rd on some weekends (especially long weekends and school holiday times)

Your alternative for this is to go back through RNP all the way to Loftus (some quite rough bits of road) along Sir Bertram Stevens Drive - along with the rest of the tourists!

Thirstymerc,

May I suggest that you decide on a date, time and destination for our first Sydney based OZBENZ drive? It seems there is quite a bit of interest, so let's make this a monthly event. Every month we can go to a different location.

Probably something like "the first Sunday of the month" would work. That way everyone knows when we are going. We can then discuss possible locations on the forum, plus get an idea of how many people are interested in coming.

Yes Marc, this is the aim, to get a date that works for all the folks which seems to be the sticking point and I'm keen to get this up and running.

Theres been a few thrown around and I know that some were keen for this weekend, but I know many were keen for a date at least a few weeks out so they can get around exisitng plans, so to be fair to everyone we should give everyone that opportunity.

I'm still keen for the original date of May 29, which is a Sunday, but as the traffic conditions are normally pretty evil on Sundays in the area we are planning, then could we just say Saturday May 28th?

If everyone still prefers the Sunday, then happy to do that as well.

As I posted earlier, we should just do a date and those that can come do and anyone who can't make it, we then make another date to run another.

With that in mind, can I suggest we just vote on the following dates to make the whole process easier and the date with most votes is it, otherwise we are never going to get this going and interest will be lost. Lets go!

Saturday May 28
Sunday May 29
Saturday June 4
Sunday June 5

The voted date will be for the Otford run with a meet up time of 10.30am as was suggested.

Once the date is locked in, meeting up point will be decided.

Cheers

FWIW I can make any of those four, but agree Saturdays are often better for traffic in the area mentioned.
This coming weekend I can't do though.
So my first vote is Saturday the 28th May, second choice, the following Saturday (June 5th), but let's see what the majority go for.

Saturday May 28 - No good
Sunday May 29 - Good to go
Saturday June 4 - Maybe
Sunday June 5 - Good to go.

Don't go out of your way to fit me in, I'm happy to just come to the next one. I've been fairly busy lately.

Ok, we have a couple of votes in, so taking in to count that Sundays would be worst for traffic in the area, it looks like Saturday June 4 might be the go for the first
"Drive & Pie" event if everyone can work with that date and lock it in?

Now, whats the best meeting point before we all head through the National Park?

Cheers
