Renting garage space

Post by Rizz280s » Sat 23 Jun, 2018 8:52 pm

Hey all,

At the moment I live in a sharehouse in a dodgy area. The Merc is currently parked on a driveway with frequent rain and leaves filling up every crevice - less than ideal! My daily driver got broken into, parked next to the Merc, so I am a little more paranoid than usual - especially as a replacement window for a W108 is probably going to cost a fair bit than for a Falcon.
So what are the solutions? A car cover - though I have not read favourable things about them here. A garage is perfect right?
I have access to a garage (which is currently full of the owners junk) and Im negotiating for the space, so here is the matter at hand.

What is a reasonable price to pay for a garage space in a house you already pay to live in?
$20/week? $10/week? Nothing?

Your thoughts are much appreciated

Hi Rizz,

The market usually sets the price: supply vs demand, thiugh off course there are exceptions to the "average" in an area, based on individual circumstances.

So, this may help you arm yourself with information:
1975 350SLC Astral Silver (725) / Blue (2012, 284,900 km - present.... a real Benz, getting better and better)
1988 190E Deep Blue (900) / Cream (2006, 190,000 km - 2007, ~ 215,000 km .... FSH and still spent big $$$)
1974 280E Reed Green (860) / Bone (1993, 316,700 km - 2004, ~490,000 km and still A1)

I don't know the market in your area but just make the comment as a past landlord - good tenants are worth their weight in gold. Someone who looks after your asset, pays your rent, if a tap washer leaks or light globe goes they just do it and save you the hassle or the agent fee, friendly etc etc. and works both ways of course and i always did my best. If your that sort of tenant and its not costing me more then i would give it to you. Landlords are different too though!

I live slightly north of Rockingham.

I live in a small town where big blocks and sheds behind the house are quite common.
They are also affordable.

I am not aware of theft of any cars etc. around the area.
Being a lower socio-economic area makes crooks go to places where money is more abundant (Freo etc.)

Send me a PM if you want to know more...

Thanks all for the replies!

The landlord doesn't want to move his stuff and suggested I just get comprehensive insurance (sigh). I'm still a student, I'm not made of money unfortunately. I didn't try to tempt him with any offers, though it's probably what he is hinting at.
I also had an offer from a mate to use his garage, free, as long as I want - but it's a good half hour drive away. It's an option at least.

Thank you also for the offer Bart, I'll keep weighing things up and try to figure something out.
