Photobucket apologies

Post by New123 » Wed 05 Jul, 2017 1:47 pm

Well, it looks as though my "pictorial" presence on this forum, as well as a few other forums, has been interrupted. Photobucket has stopped hosting pictures until a (rather high) ransom is paid. So, after more than 8 years of "It's Free!" (and definitely geting my money's worth, BTW), they are now demanding payment. Until I find some other alternative (Sorry, but I'm not paying) any pics I have posted in a forum requiring 3rd party hosting are gone. I know this really screws up old threads where pics make up a good portion of the story, and frankly I'm surprised more thread pics aren't gone, but like I said - I ain't payin'. I am assuming either everyone else is using something other than Photobucket or have paid the ransom, because I don't see the widespread carnage I was expecting. Oh well, once again I have spoiled things for everyone else.
My most sincere apologies. :banghead:

Not only your images are gone. I am also a Photobucket user and find my images here and on other sites (where I have linked images from photobucket) are not available any more.
The only thing to do, is to load the images onto the forum and use them in your posts.
use the [Upload Attachment] function below the [Submit] button below.

the problem is it seems to happen to most free service at some point ..400 pa is way to high for hobby folks ..
not sure what it would cost to host them on your own site ,, not to mention the pain setting it up , and since photobucket was very popular it means 1000 s of usefull and informative threads are go .. even re installing then to another host and changing every post could be a massive task for the guys to share so much ..
a big thanks to those guys hopefully an answer is found but sadly most forums may as well delete most posts and start again

When did this happen? I only put some pics up last week when i had a car on ebay. I hope i didn't actually hit a button that committed me to paying the ransom. Especially since all the photos i took time taking and loading, for one potential buyer and then he had a pathetic excuse for not bidding! One thing i did notice how painful the constant adverts are that popup constantly.

but i note flickr.

I've used Flickr for years. (belongs to yahoo).
You get a Terabyte free (how long this lasts for is a good question).
One terabyte is gazillions of images.
You need to down size your images - 100 - 200 kilobytes is ample per image.

The only issue I have with Flickr is crossposting the images - I use a fiddly BBcode method.

Ultimately, if all the image hosting sites become paid then your ISP usually gives you some space.

The Photobucket issue is causing forum ructions world wide :snooty:

F.W.I.W.
Looks like the laws of unintended consequences are kicking in.
I'm reading overseas financial news and it seems like Photobucket and its owner have kicked an own goal.
This action by photobucket by suddenly wiping images and ransoming them for a paid subs cription has damaged the brand beyond redemption. Even if the subscription is rescinded today it's to late. Users will leave in droves regardless.
The financial pundits are saying the label is finished and their stocks will be wiped off the board.
Maybe the company behind photobucket never heard of the similar fate that occurred with Geocites and others.

I have multiple disks of all my images. It took me many months with a high level slide and positive scanner to get 40 years of images digitised. I don't want to do it again. I bought an expensive scanner to do the job and then sold it again when I'd finished.

Agreed,

and these days you can't buy a coolscan 9000 second-hand for less than double the price they were when new.... :protest:

I had a mate who picked up an Imacon 949 (imacon were acquired by Hasselblad about 10 years ago) for just on 10K AUD. I thought he was barking mad.

The same scanner is now over 20K AUD minimum, It's been rebadged as the Hasselblad flextight X1 and really the only thing that has changed is the connector interface.

I've always found these guys to be really good with unbiased reviews of scanners.

Wow, that is just stunning that photobucket couldn't see that coming and by the sound of things overnight grenaded their company. I better look at what i had in it and if i don't have them elsewhere. I mainly just used it when i wanted to share stuff.

Re: Photobucket apologies

I guess my reasoning for joining Flickr as a paid member, when everyone was offering "free" hosting was a wise idea. I have no storage limit, I pay a small annual service fee, which isn't even 5% of the cost of an equivalent hard drive -

for me the main issue with photobucket was the spam an the access methodology.

It's becoming more prevalent in this cloud-based storage medium to impose some very strange terms of use. It's important to not ignore these before signing up to anything. Even now, the terms of use have changed for the non-paying members on the storage sites. basically anything you upload, is no longer yours.

Again, Flickr ensures copyright and usage limits, sharing and stock image programs. So when you sign up, you should be aware of what you are saying yes to.

I choose to not share any of my private photos, but happy to share in groups, but retain copyright ownership. It's important to know that people are not using your images without first asking you for permission.

It's ok to share, or allow others to share, but it's not ok if you don't ask first.

Just remember that as a courtesy with any images that others may upload here - even though they are in the public domain, if you do want to share someone elses image, it's nice to ask them first.

:occasion5:

If you want to use an image hosting service, then I would recommend Flickr. They have been 100% reliable for me for the last 5 years.

Thanks Joe, looks like I might have to move all my pics across to Flickr. I probably have a whole bunch of old outdated images on my photobucket account that need to be binned anyway.

Done! I have also restored the lost pics in the "Project Calvin" (W114/W115) thread. Lot's more work to do...

A couple of weeks ago someone posted a link to getting around photobucket . i was about to open it up when i realised it was probably a malware thing and ignored it. The boss of photobucket, who had only recently bought the company , was beginning to piss me off with the constant advertising and spam that was coming from them. Entering the site you get bombarded with click bait just like Facebook etc. The big difference is, you have no pressing need to go to photobucket. Well the CEo's name is John Corpus and he became CEO after photobucket bought his company .. not a great move. So... we will see photobucket Corpus now. Image
