@WA Members: Where to go in Perth?

Post by T-Modell » Wed 17 May, 2017 6:47 pm

Hi down under,

my wife and I are planning a trip to Oz around Easter 2018. We're invited to a wedding and one idea was to visit WA, Perth, as we both haven't been there before (and everything we've heard was so positive). I also definitely want to do the train Perth-Adelaide (or vice versa), so it will be around 6 full days there.

One of my ideas was to visit that little "independent" kingdom, but that's too far away from Perth. So I have the following questions:

1) The city of Perth itself: two days enough to explore?
2) Any special recommendations IN Perth, e. g. what to visit or some good restaurants?
3) Do you have any recommendations, what to visit / where to go outside of Perth?
4) How about going South (I mean by car, not what you think :laughing6: ), direction of Mandurah / Bunbury?

We're aware that we have to drive a bit, but we're not intending to do a 1-day-1,000-km-drive for just one day. Any tips and recommendations highly welcome!!!

With my best regards
Thomas

P. S.: If any of the OZBenz members are interested to meet, I'm happy to have a car talk in WA ... Giles offered it already :occasion5:

So you will be in Adelaide too? Eddy was telling me about his recent catchup over there, he is only 5 minutes drive from me anyway. But if you want a tour plan for Adelaide, let us know what sort of things you are into (apart from the obvious) and I can make a list of suggestions.

Thomas,
I would be happy to meet you and your wife when you come to Perth next Easter.
What to do?
Kings Park a large well maintained area of bushland and botanic garden.
Beaches - If you are into swimming / surfing Perth has the best beaches in Australia
Wine - The Swan valley has many wineries. The Margaret River area wineries and breweries (270 km south of Perth on good highways - busy over Easter weekend)
Natural bushland. The hills of Perth have many parks, dams and natural bushland in pristine condition usually no more than an hours drive from the city. Bungendore Park is an international destination for bird watching.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to WA.

If you have time I am happy to invite you and the missus to my place in Medina.
Medina is a heritage village, with 90% of the houses still in the original build from 1956. A bit of a time warp and a look into Australia's past.
Also one of the greenest suburbs.

After you visited us, you can have lunch or dinner at Rustico in Rockingham. A tapas restaurant that has received best restaurant awards for more than 5 years now (booking essential)

I would also suggest:

South:
-A drive to Margaret River
-A short stay in Pemberton, don't forget to climb the Gloucester Tree
-A visit to Cape Leeuwin

North:
-Kalbarri
-Coral Bay

But that all depends on how many weeks you have.

Thank's a lot guys,

it would be great to meet you guys in Perth or surroundings! Regarding my question No.1, Perth itself: We normally book a walking tour or Segway Tour on arrival to have a first impression of a city. Would the 1-2 days for the city itself be sufficient? Or is two days too much?

@Craig: Adelaide is not decided yet; depending on the overall schedule we might arrive by train and head straight to the Airport. In case we can fit in a night or two in Adelaide, it would be great to catch up with you and Eddie!

With my best regards
Thomas

Some quick ramblings. A plane for me awaits.

The jewel in the Perth city area is Kings Park botanical garden. Perth city is just another city with most of the orignal heritage buildings demolished in the 1970's. Half a day in Kings Park, half a day in the city. Secong day you can catch a ferry down to Fremantle. You can spend easy a full day here.

Mandurah to Bunbury can be avoided as your in the heart land of crystal meth central. Keep driving a liitle futher to Busselton. Their is a long jelly here so you can stretch the legs and at the end of the jetty is an underwater viewing aquarium.

Departing on your budget? Fancy pants Accommodation can be found at Eagle Bay - Dunsborough. Seashells at Yallinyup which is next to the historical pub is also good valve. You can just walk across the gardens if your a little thirsty instead of driving. Its also recommended not driving at night due to Kangaroo movement. Caves Rd from Yallingup - Margaret River - Augusta is very scenic with plenty of vineyards.

Cape to Cape walk is an option?

Since your planning to come around Easter, book early.

Further south.......

Stirling Ranges? A few montains/hills/bumps can be climbed in 4 hours return. Rarest emdemic flora in the world.
Esperance - Lucky Bay.

Thomas, you'll need a much longer period of time.

Perth will provide you with taste of WA. It would take you a few weeks to encapture what it had to offer. Perhaps BYO R107 next time and we can do a road trip.

There are plenty of black spots to avoid but where on earth doesn't.

Let me know when your coming and I'll buy you that beer I've been promising. If you've got the time I can offer you both a daytour of the South West. Good scenery, wine beers & food to be had.

Thomas when you book accommodation in Perth city may i suggest you book into the Parmelia Hilton Hotel (14 Mill St Perth) - book King-Guest Room-with breakfast included.
This hotel is excellent value for money and is very well appointed and the rooms are immaculate and of high standard. The hotel oozes charm and character.
http://www3.hilton.com/en/hotels/wester ... index.html
It is just around the corner from where i work and is where i stay all the time if my wife & i want a Saturday night dining out out in the city and drive home next day.
With work we regularly drink and eat there all the time as the ground floor Adelphi Grill & bar has excellent food & service for breakfast, lunch & evening meals.
Also just across the road is Tony Roma's - great evening meal as Ribs to die for
http://www.tonyromas.com.au
Its location is perfect for walking around the city central hub as well as walking down to Elizabeth Quay on the water and also a short walk up to King Park over the foot-bridge (i regularly walk over there up to Kings where Jacobs Ladder is during my lunch break)
The double decker tourist bus is an easy way to get around as it is a hop on-hop off bus that does its laps all day long so you can get off and jump back on whenever suits you-
http://www.perthexplorer.com.au

I have traveled and stayed at all the major cities in Aust and Perth is by far the best of them all for what it has to offer (especially when you only have limited time as not so big and congested like Sydney)
If i were you i would stretch your time in Perth out as much as you can!! as it is impossible to get a decent feel of the place in 2 days
https://www.google.com.au/search?q=stun ... Perth+City+

Forget the train trip as that takes up too much time (and cost!!) and you are crossing a vast desert with nothing to see - not interesting at all.
Fly over and allow as much time in WA as you can to spend time in Perth and its many attractions as well as heading down south to Busselton, Dunsborough, Margaret River region.
There are plenty of car hire companies over here where you can hire cars cheap like an Toyota Prado etc - but for something more interesting like a Merc soft top to travel down south in-
https://www.hertz.com.au/rentacar/produ ... tionUS.jsp

Once we get a feel of your agenda and time-frame over on the west in the city and then time-frame down south - then we can help help narrow it down to what best to see in the time your have allowed and also what are the things as a tourist that most interest you both

Looking forward to meeting you Thomas and forget about the car hire. Konrad will be available by then.
Don't write off the trip to Adelaide but NOT BY TRAIN. You must drive it. The trip is something which you will treasure for a long time. Desert has it's own unique beauty.

Wow,
thanks a lot for all those tips! We'll look into that. Regarding the train:

3-4 years ago there was "Australia-Day" on 3SAT, a TV-Station run by Germany, Austria and Switzerland ... 24 hours just about Australia. One 45 minutes documentary was about the Sydney-Perth train ... and it was fascinating. In German we have a word "erfahren" which means either "to experience" or "to learn to know". This word also contains "fahren" -> to drive. So with that train you can "erfahren" Australia, i. e. drive the train for a long time AND experience the vastness of the country (in German you can "take" a train but also "drive" a train).

I compare this to e. g. our Ireland trip with the SL: It's a difference to fly to Dublin in 1 hour or driving for hours to Cherbourg, taking the ferry over night and arrive in Ireland. In case 1 you need 1-2 days after arrival to "be on holiday", by taking the car trip, you experience hour by hour how you move away from home into a holiday.

I don't know, if that makes any sense for you, but I really like to do the train one-way. I know, 6 days is not a lot, but friends and grandson are waiting in Melbourne, there's the wedding and - maybe - we add 5-6 days relaxing time somewhere in Queensland.

Thanks again for all the information and offers, it's highly appreciated!
Thomas

@Kim: thanks for the links, especially the hotel and the bus!
@Phil: thanks for the offer! We'll take a car, when we're leaving Perth, but a drive in Konrad would be great too!

Thomas,
Ignore the anti-train brigade :boxing: :boxing:
I can recommend the India Pacific as one of the iconic train journeys in the World. My wife and I have done the India Pacific Perth - Sydney. One that you cannot do anymore is the Sunlander from Brisbane to Cairns. My wife and I extended our India Pacific trip with a Country Link train from Sydney to Brisbane and followed that with the Sunlander in the last months of its operation. We have since traveled on the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide
The train is not transport, it is an experience. It is a huge part of the holiday. Not much more expensive than sleeping in a high class hotel with top restaurant meals and tours across the country, combined with first class travel.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

Tony,
you summarised it perfectly ... the journey is the objective ...

Thomas
P. S.: Reg. cost of the train: If you count 2-3 nights in a hotel + food + 2 flight tickets, there's not a lot of difference, if all.

I agree, driving across the Nullabor is an experience you should do once in your lifetime. More than once is Waaay too much.
I have done it more than 10 times, mainly because we couldn't afford to fly and hire a car at the other end, nut twice to transport cars from East to West.

Not sure about "once in a lifetime" perhaps once in a decade.
My first trip was in a Renault 12TL back in the late '70's (before the road was fully sealed) now that was an adventure.
Second trip was in the early '80's in a Ford Marquis (through to Queensland) and the last in 2015 bringing a W109 300SEL home from Adelaide.
I loved every trip and would leave again tomorrow if I could. (anyone need a car delivered/picked up?)

our trip is planned, and I have sent a PM to all who responded and who are interested in a possible meeting. We'll be in Perth and South of it, i. e. towards Margret River.

Would be great to meet you guys there!!!

Hi Thomas

Let us know the date and I'll organise one of our C126/W126 cars, cruise and burgers while you're here.

We've had guys travel from Bunbury, Kalgoorlie but never an international guest.

Hi "Perth-Experts",

some questions arose when we were planning this trip, maybe some of you can answer it:

1) If we want to go to Fremantle from Perth City, is there some convenient public transport available or do we need a car?
2) Would Rottnest be worth a visit or is it more for "bird and nature" lovers?

Thanks for any help!
Thomas

Take the train from Perth downtown to Freo. Hop on the Freo line, and watch the coastline while you are bumbling down.
Quicker than the car on most days.

By all means, take the Ferry to Rotto. Hire a bike and spend a day on the island cycling around and look at the quokkas and the single windmill that Tony Abott took so much offense to... http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/tony- ... hmsta.html

Rotto Ferry is not cheap, but the island has some history (Aboriginal people were incarcerated there in the past - a black page in WA's history)
Decent food too.

DO NOT go to Rottnest.
I have never heard a tourist say that they enjoyed a day trip to Rottnest.
They are invariably disappointed.
Why?
Rottnest has a simple?casual charm which takes time to acquire.
One day is not enough

Thomas & Cynthia headed off on the train to the eat coast on Sunday morning

They had a great time in WA and managed to see a mixture of places besides the usual touristy spots in their weeks stay here.
They like to get out and do plenty of walking around to get a better feel of places on their ventures

I was their chauffeur on two separate nights picking them up from their hotel on both occasions in the 560SEL and both nights we ate out away from the city centre with first night at North Beach overlooking the ocean and last Saturday night down at Hillary's Marina at Hurricanes Grill which specialises in grilled delicious Ribs.

The first night i picked them up (Thursday night) in the 560SEL and at the end of the night we dropped into my place and switched cars into the white coupe and cruised back into the city to drop them back to their hotel - much to the amusement of the Hotel Porters seeing and hearing two different 80's V8 Mercs rumble into the Parmelia Hilton hotel front porch drop off area in one night!! haha.

They visited few of us MB members during the weeks stay on their way down to Margaret River and really enjoyed catching up with all of them and sounds like they had a blast down south visiting the winery region and coast down there

Anyway no doubt Thomas will fill everyone in on the details at the end of their trip and i would be interested to hear how their train trip across Australia went heading to Melbourne for a wedding. Not many people i know have ever done the train trip as it takes so long compared to flying!!!
Thomas took lots of pics during their stay here so he will no doubt add it to their website blog for all to have a good read

Hi everyone,

Kim has basically explained it all :laughing6: ... we had a really great time in WA. And of course it was so good to meet Kim, Tony & his wife, Bart and his wife and Giles and his wife in person. Thanks again to all of you guys for taking the time!

We found out, that you don't need Uber in WA; Kims chauffeuring is so much better :laughing6: ... here's some pics ...

For the record on Picture #2:

Tony is not my wife :laughing6:

My missus was the photographer.

Thanks for visiting us Thomas and Cyntia! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your trip.
