Two interesting stories here that date back to 2006 -
About the mafia car underworld - "steal to order" market for MB's mainly going in shipping containers to place like China
And and interesting lady named Bromlyn who's dad owned a coastal country pub on the WA coast back some 14yrs ago

I would assume this is still big business now when you here stories of cars just vanishing never to be seen again especially now with the newer more exotic models as well as the older classic models.
I suppose Bromlyn is a lot older now and has since calmed/settled down with kids?

here in Europe it is still standard, steal to order. Also Airbags / Navis from new cars, especially BMW's. They rip it out and sell in the East. There are owners who's airbags and navis have been stolen twice in the first few months they had the car.

A few years ago I owned a W201 2.6 with a MPH speedometer.
It had been imported from Swingapore. However, The car had been imported to Swingapore from the U.K. by the original owner who had diplomatic standing.
I changed the MPH cluster for a KPH one - went straight in.

Sisters father in law once had a Jag XJ. It was stolen. The insurance company paid him out within two weeks. Their rep told him that the car would have been in a container the same night and on a ship outbound within the two weeks. Police who did the report remarked that they would never see it again.
