So, I've got a 560 now too ...

Post by T-Modell » Sat 23 Feb, 2019 8:20 pm

Hi down under,
after everyone is so fond here about the 560, I thought I get myself one. The AMG E63 got old and I thought a short wheelbase limousine would suit my business needs. So this week I picked it up:

Image

:laughing6: :laughing6: ... I'd like to see the faces now of the W126 nutters :laughing5:

So under 500hp, no 6.2 litres anymore. It's a S560 with a 4-Liter-V8 and 469hp, no 4WD. All comfort extras included (incl. automatic parking); very important: warmth comfort package ... so not only the seats heat up, but also the armrests in the doors and in the middle :laughing6: :laughing6:

So Thursday we picked it up with our grandson, was a nice day. We had to lie; he's only 4 but tall as a 6-year-old. The factory tour has changed significantly (to the positive side) ... over 2 hours and you walk around in the body production and in the final assembly of the S-Class.

So why this car and no AMG?

1) AMG has become a mass product; there's E63 then E43, now even E53 and so forth in all models. Furthermore - maybe you Aussies don't understand - but the AMG exhaust have become adolescently loud ... for the ones with the short dicks.

2) comfort, comfort, comfort: I was pretty surprised, how big the difference between E- and S-Class is regarding comfort, especially riding and noise. On top of that all those great assistants, very relaxing.

3) Why no S63 AMG? a) I can't afford that and it would have been another 40,000 EUR (without VAT (!)) and I have to pay taxes for it. b) the power is sufficient for me.

On Thursday, when we drove home, there was stop and go ... you start the distronic and it drives you home. Even down to 0km/h and it restarts automatically, just great!

I would have never thought, that I can afford that from my own work. I'm a bit proud of that

Regards
Thomas

Yes, 469hp could be described as 'sufficient'. Did you work for Rolls-Royce in the '80s? They described their cars' power as adequate too.

Congrats Thomas - was wondering what it was. I think a new s class at any point in time must be something special.

I do get confused with their numbers these days..... 560... took the hp, divide capacity by 4, x 100 and add it and then round it down to the nearest 10?

I guess they just thought they did a really good job of it so it deserved to use the 560 badge again!

Thomas,

For us W126 Nutters to make an informed decision on your nice looking purchase, you need to do the following......

Park your new chariot (yours looks black, correct me if I'm wrong) alongside a black W126 560SEC, preferably in profile. This will enable us 126 Nutters to see if Bruno Sacco is still the Design Konig! :notworthy:

Cheers,

Thanks guys,
it's ruby black, so with a touch of red. I personally like the design.

For a long time the numbers do not indicate the size of the motor anymore. The predecessor with the 5.5 Liter was named S500 in Germany and S550 in the US. The 1.8 and 2.0 litres you can get with the batches 180,200,250 and 300, depending on the model. An E63 is the same 4-litre motor.

So my guess, is that at the end of the life of the W222 they revived the good old "560" number ...

I agree Thomas, its about resonating with buyers. I know its a long time ago but my 1968 1750 GTV Alfa is actually 1800cc - but the name came from the 6C 1750 of 1929 - "In 1929, it won every major racing event it was entered, including the Grands Prix of Belgium, Spain, Tunis and Monza, as well as the Mille Miglia was won with Giuseppe Campari and Giulio Ramponi, the Brooklands Double Twelve and the Ulster TT was won also, in 1930 it won again the Mille Miglia and Spa 24 Hours"..... so just a number but one that people connect to.

Congratulations Thomas!

That’s a nice looking car and the technology it comes with is amazing.

Many happy kilometres.

Hi,
must have been a temporary problem with your internet connection; as I host the pic on my own domain, you should be able to access a pic on a German website, otherwise all the pics on the pickup thread wouldn't have been visible in Oz. Just checked, there are no "Umlaut"'s in the file name, so it should work!

Yes, and clearing the Tim Tams also fixes a lot of problems for me. :laughing5:

Maybe you're already supervised by the US. As Germany now seems to move up in ranking to the top enemy (national security!), they might start blocking German websites :laughing6: ... it's a direct link to the pic, so I guess everyone else can see it ... I haven't deleted it.
