Suspension Theory - Spring rates & Damping.

Post by AMG » Sun 15 Aug, 2010 5:49 pm

Most of us prefer to keep the ride quality and handling characteristics of our vehicles relatively standard - or to within a factory sport specification.

If you want to replace your standard Mercedes springs & sachs/bilstein dampers, with a H&R kit or the original specification or optional Heavy Duty specification contact the Forum Sponsor

However, custom suspension is very vehichle-specific, and driver preference specific also.
Some of us need specific detailed specification parts to cater for a very specific usage type - e.g tarmac rallying / circuit racing / offroad rally.

Notable aftermarket vendors such as Eibach, Bilstein, and H&R have mass-produced many "tuner-style" Mercedes-Benz suspension products and kits to cater for just about every style of road driving, BUT the specification information is not easily obtainable when it comes to older model vehicles, and it is not detailed enough when it comes to a specific vehicle application requirement such as circuit racing.

Sometimes you want to use a specific brand which do not make OEM parts such as Koni because you are after something you know or have good experience with.

With this is mind I though about those who want to know specific details and their effect, I decided spring rates are probably the first port of call. here is a Spring Calculator - links to external site.

Theory on dampers AKA Shock-Absorbers.

with this load of physics on-board, you should be able to take your existing vehicle corner weights, springs and dampers, and calculate the ballpark of where you need to be.

I'll update this thread as required with more info & links as necessary.

These contacts are motorsports people and not street tuner / general replacement parts. Do not call them with your general enquiries.
