Becker 374 unbalanced balance

Post by Giles » Tue 29 May, 2012 11:05 pm

For those that may know the Becker 374, as fitted in my recently acquired W116 450SEL.
Mine has a balance problem, the left channel is much louder than the right. I have tried another fader but the problem remains. I reverse the fader and the right is of lesser volume. I half plug in the fader and the left is fine, do the same for the right but it's faint. I turn the volume up and the rights fine but way too loud on the left. There's no balance control on the unit, is there an adjustment elsewhere? Do these system have a common ground, if so there may be a connection out ot phase perhaps?

Giles

I would suspect that the right side amplifier is shot. If you are capable, jump in there with a soldering iron and replace the electrolytic capacitors.

Located the amp behind the glove box. Pulled it apart and no sign of leaking capacitors and all the solder joints looked OK.
Proceeded to pull the unit out and found a balance control on top of the unit.
It required a small flat head screw driver inserted for adjustment, so I decided to remove the top just to see what was inside. I gave the adjustment a few swivels and applied some downward pressure and all is functioning fine with the exception of the cassette deck, it doesn't hold the tape in.
I"ll work on that later.

Sounds to me like a phasing issue.

I beleive it was more like a dry joint in the balance control.
