Toyota landcruiser with merc Diesel conversion

Post by Mercmad » Sun 29 May, 2016 7:39 pm

This is quite a common thing to do in the US, repower a cruiser with a OM 617 Normally but this guy has gone with a OM 606 ,the DOHC 4 valve engine which they have modified with a mechanical pump instead of common rail injection. No ECu etc.

Mercmad,
None of the OM60x engines were common rail. The reason for using the IP from an OM603 was to overcome the lack of an ECU in the Tojo, which the IP from the OM606 needed to allow the 'fly by wire' of the OM606.
In the USA, OM603 were available with a turbo, but not in Oz. This the OM603 IP gave then the ALDA and mechanical throttle.

Thanks for the link.
Regards,
Tony

There's a lot of stuff said about the 603 pump on the 606a, but the 606a's pump is actually a better unit, the downside is that people like the 'all-mechanical' and no electrics in their diesel engine bays.

Currently looking at 606a's and 722.6 from places like Serbia where you can get good used ones for about a grand.

The other thing is that people don't want the Mercedes ECU. Is there a compatible ECU from another source which will work on the OM606?
Ditto for the OM605

I am spec'ing up an OM605 and have bought the IP from a Turbo OM602 (US) as I couldn't find an after market ECU to deal with the IP and was advised the Benz Unit requires ABS sensor data and other inputs to operate effectively (Very happy to be corrected). I have also had to repair the electronic IP on my W202 OM605 because of some common idle arm not returning properly fault so am not so keen on them. The 722.6xx has an aftermarket ECU as plenty of Chrysler folks have modded them.

You can get OM605 722.6xx combos form the UK for a grand. Its bringing the engine into Oz that costs.

Very informative - Thanks ... Costs about the same as a good turbo mechanical IP.
