Swap: W114 Coupe w/M104 E320

Post by hismajestics » Sun 14 Sep, 2014 6:39 pm

Hi everybody,

I started my topic under W115/W114. The car is still in progress and now "MOT'd" here in Finland being street legal. I thought I would share a couple of pic's about the status today. I would really appreciate feed back and advice. Thanks!

The engine is from a E320T -93, a three owner car with 210k km's on the clock. Gerbox a ZF 717.450 5 sp dogleg. Coupe is a one owner 250CE from -72 and 260k km's on the clock.

Modern power and dependability wrapped in a classic shell. Nice! With the 5 speed, I'll bet that thing is a real pleasure to drive!

Well done!

You have asked for feedback and advice.

My feedback is the same as everyone else - I am very much impressed by your work. As I generally limit myself to changing the oil and plugs, anything like this looks miraculous.

As for advice, I can really see only one thing wrong with the car - it is not in my driveway.

:happy3: Thank you very much for your feed back!

I need some help with the braces from the firewall (export brace US??) which I needed to cut away in order to have space for the engine. I have a feeling there's more body roll now so these braces did fill a function.

Anybody have any idea what would be the smartest way of building/attaching new braces? On a 280 model there where no braces and i guess the sheet metal in front fenders was of thicker material. Not sure, though.

Perhaps somebody of forum members have done this or somebody having pics of how-to? Thanks!

Good job but I thought Diesel engines is what they use in Finland, with big turbos.

Nice work - and a very healthy power upgrade.

What is your diff ratio?

which dual-mass flywheel did you use? or did you fabricate a custom one?

Don't suppose you remember how long the gearbox input shaft was relative to the bellhousing mating face?

cheers

Thanks! Exactly, diesel w/big turbo is the thing here and they build them mostly for 1/4 mile or drifting. Mine is more for occasional track days. Big black smoke is not that appreciated in those circles

It's 3,69. As in donor and as in Coupe originally. After some 1000k km's the feeling is that closer to 3,07 or something could be better (feels it needs one gear more).

I did not open the package and dropped it in as it was on the donor. Can you get something from this:

VIN of the donor: WDB1240921F261514
Engine no: 104992 10 001861
Transmission: 717450 06 335607

I saw an alternate brace installation that looked quite simple and logical on a W114 with a M117 5.6L V* swap. The braces look like they could have been done by the factory. If you zoom in on the image you can see them fairly clearly.

I was told that the later 114 with the M110 that lost the strut towers had a thicker firewall to compensate, so that is not really an option for you.
I dare say you will have to do some welding in the engine bay and make some mounting positions and braces, something like this below. Go from the inner guards on the side to the central part of the firewall. Beef up the steel where the attachment points are.

Sorry for late reply. For some reason I do not get notifications from ozbenz... :angry5:

Thanks for the advice and pics. I haven't solved that issue yet. I did change wheels to 16" and better tires. The drive on the circuit was totally different. Probably it wasn't body roll I was experiencing, maybe it was just too high profile on tires. Previous 65, now 55/50.
