Star Shots! - Show us your Ride

Post by AMG » Mon 05 Mar, 2007 10:54 am

Post Pictures of your car here!

Don't forget to include details such as year, colour etc.
If your car has a story, for example; how you came across it, - put it in here with the pictures. It's always nice to read someone else's experiences.

If you've done any modifications / improvments, Here's the place to show them off - Post lots of pics!

It's not a bad idea to revisit your post every now and then, to make sure your pictures are still up. We'd also like to encourage those who do post a Project car, and supply us with updates, to come back to your original post and edit it, rather than make a new post each time, by replying. It will help keep all your pictures and progress in one spot!

It also makes your post MUCH easier to view.

If you're unsure on how to upload pictures, go to the posting tutorial on the main board and try the test posting page, Don't forget to sign yourself up for a free account on imageshack / photobucket etc.. if you haven't already.

Show us ya Pics! :)

This is my current daily driver, a very rare for Australia 1990 190E-2.3 Sportline with 5-speed manual transmission. I have owned this since early 2003 and despite its fairly high kilometres it is still in very good condition and is heaps of fun to drive with absolutely brilliant handling courtesy of the Sportline suspension and steering. The big four with surprisingly good torque from low in the rev range combined with the 5-speed manual makes easy work of the light W201 body. The leather Sportline seats are nice too with the back seat being about the most comfortable I have ever sat in (although the experience in the driver's seat is too good to want to sit in any other seat). A sensible daily driver which combines performance, handling, safety and economy.

My first Merc - 1986 190D 2.5. A mere 149,000km as of August 2008, which for a 22 year old diesel is pretty damn low. It's done less than 10,000km since 1994. That's about to change though ;-) Hopefully within a few months she'll be running on biodiesel.

That coolant reservoir/header tank is a worry, looks like it had some head gasket trouble in the past.

Thanks Joe. There are a couple of small dents and scratches in spots which I hope to sort out in due time, but overall she's a credit to her two previous owners. There's a section in the service log where it was serviced on the exact same day of the month for about 4 or 5 six-month intervals. Gotta love that attention.
Hendrik wrote:That coolant reservoir/header tank is a worry, looks like it had some head gasket trouble in the past.
Really? Could you elaborate? There's nothing mentioned about the head gasket in the service history. Most of the 190s I've looked at had a similar darkening of the tank... in fact a lot of Euro cars of similar vintage do (my old Saab did, from memory).

Cheers, Ben.

This is a picture of the engine bay of my old 190E, that is how the tank looks after 23 years (if it was the original one), the one in my 89 TE is much the same. They will go a bit darker with age but should not be that color. Assuming that it was serviced by MB, then wrong type of coolant should not be the problem. That is why I am guessing head gasket, although usually the reservoir is replaced as well.
Then again it is also possible that different batches/manufacturers of those header tanks age differently.
Anyway it's a nice looking 2.5, they are nice commuter cars and it appears you have cruise as well, enjoy it.

Thanks for the info. The car will be going into Jedamzik's in the next week or so for its 150,000km service so I'll get the guys to give it a thorough once over. Hopefully they won't unearth much ;-)

Here's Hermann (Lang) picked up today.
Cosworth 2.3-16. drives on rails 100% original. a real nice find.

Just need to get on with the cleaning process, as P.O. had not used the car for 6 months.

Well done Joe! It looks very original (right down to the original Becker) apart from what appear to be 16" R129 wheels (although the 2.5-16 Evo1 ran these). Now, can I do a deal for you on a set of the correct 15" wheels  . I can spot some nice interior options too. Just a pity about the wrong shifter between the seats and lack of a pedal. At least that means it will have been less likely to have had the wrong type of owners.

Now, I'm sure you're looking for an excuse to take it for a drive and enjoying some of the best road-holding MB ever did so hurry up and bring it around so I can have a proper look.

Cheers,
Greg

I already have the original 15" wheels as well.... see I really did mean 100% original, matching numbers unmolested example.

Got a few things to sort out which are minor, so will be attending to these in the coming weeks.

Can't keep the grin off my face. it's just fantastic.

Now the shitty rain has abated and I have the new studs delivered, I finally got around to taking pics of Hermann with the Lorinser LO rims.

Spec is 16x8 ET35 with Falken FK452 rubber bands - 225/45/ZR16

Warning to low-bandwidth users: these pics are quite large and may take a while to download.

I first saw this car probably 10 years ago when it lived in the eastern suburbs but was not for sale and was an auto. It was a good looking vehicle then and it is now but will be even better when Joe has finished. But beware it has had a mighty engine rebuild by the Guru and goes with the unmodified best of this 190E model. Now Joe, you really don't expect us to believe that you will leave it entirely standard, not when a reliable 350hp is available???(or an unreliable 500hp).

That's funny, I have some very similar photos on my camera! Three fine looking automobiles!

Something that was interesting to note when the three cars were parked side by side on concrete, was just how much lower the Sportline is than the the two Cosworths. Now I understand how several Cosworth drivers (including these two) tell me they can run wider wheels and tyres and wheels with a greater outward offset without severe rubbing issues on hard corners. I find on the Sportline that even the 205/55 on the 7 x 15 ET44 rims (that was the standard wheel & tyre conbination for the Sportlines and Cosworths) gives some rubbing at the front arches on hard cornering. 8 x 16 ET34 rims would be out of the question on my car.

As to the ride height, I can only assume that whilst the Cosworth was lower than the standard W201 prior to the late 1988 update, the Sportline was lower again as it was a lower version of the update which was lower than the early models.

i guess i might as well chime in ;)

hello from the motherland! one of my nightly Lorinser-LO-google-escapades led me here. it almost seems as if those rims are less rare down under than up here in germany

here is my 2.6 in its current state. i recently aquired it as a car for my wife and as a daily, since i felt the need to keep my saab 901 away from all the crazy drivers (and esp. parkers) over here. it was quite the bargain and since i've always been a big fan of my friends 2.5 16v i instantly jumped on the great deal.

it's a 1990 2.6 with currently 120000km. for now i paired up the h&r springs with w210 7,5x16 rear, w211 7x16 front and w140 hubcaps. give's a nice oem+ look without sacrificing the "sleeperesness"

Image

Image

and just for reference, this is the aforementioned car that got me hooked on w201. it's completely stripped, crazy fast and sees more track than street

Image

Image

so anyway... if anyone wants to stagger their set of lorinser LO, i'm looking to trade two of my 16x8 et22 against some et35s. et22 is just to low for me on the front (at least for non-16v. my friend's intras are et23 all around and they fit perfectly). i will be covering the shipping and since my et22 are not refurbed yet, we could talk about some monetary compensation, or german plates or any other stuff you guys might need from over here

Now washed and reasonably clean, 24v 4 piston front callipers and new rotors all round and err... slightly bigger wheels (18x8 now with 225/40R18W Conti sport contact 3s)

Thanks to EVOsRule for all the help and mucking around fitting these up.

AMG options? From the factory or aftermarket and I am guessing it still has a standard engine?

Looks good. White sounds so boring, but when cleaned up looks a real treat. Not so sure on the AMG options. The steering wheel looks right, but the spoiler looks very odd. For starters the AMG logo is on the wrong side. My bet is that it is a "Bob Jane" AMG part, he was the agent back in the 80s and 90's and from what I have seen was not always 100% authentic in what he branded as AMG.

Here is what the genuine article looks like:

Correct John,

My father purchased the car from Lanes Motors Melb. with the AMG parts being supplied to Lanes by Bob Jane.

The rear spoiler is the genuine W201 AMG part made in Germany:

It looks very tidy and I still like a 201 in white (although I could be biased).

Is it really just a 180E or 190E 1.8 (201.018)? The reason I ask is that the 201.018 usually didn't have the rev counter (instead, just a large clock). Electric windows also weren't so common in the 018. The "early" style lower centre section of the dash does however appear consistent with it being an 018 as by 1993 all other W201 models had the lower dash section which extended all the way down to the centre console (in a manner similar to the 16 valve models).

Late 201 models apart from the 018 also had the exterior mirrors painted in body colour. From the 1989 update onwards all 201s apart from the 018 also had the roof and window trims finished in glossy dark bronze anodise whereas the 018 retained the matt charcoal finish on the trim like all the early 201s.

Hi Greg,

Yes it is a 201.018 or "180E" by the original sales receipt. ( I have the 180E badge in original MB packaging that the dealer never fitted in lue of the AMG badge being fitted). My father was very fussy and optioned it up to the hilt at time of purchase.

Cheers

The rear bar of the car in the promotional shot is also differant to what I would have thought was normal in that there is no cut out for the Exhaust?? Maybe it is a very late option kit?

Hi John,

I've done a bit of research since I received the car and apparently there were three different types of AMG rear spoilers fitted to the W201:

"AMG rear Lip Spoiler" - fitted normally to 8V models (Same as my photo) *Most common
"AMG rear Ducktail Spoiler" - fitted normally to the Limited Edition 3.2 AMG Model (Same as your photo)
"AMG M3 Style rear Spoiler" - Fitted normally to the North American Model

Hope this helps,

TeeCee

I actually have a set of those 15 inch AMG wheels sold by Bob Janes (actually the one in Haberfield). At some stage they've been resprayed plain silver, and unfortunately one of them is more an oval than a circle!

But, if anyone wants to pick 'em up from me in Sydney, you're more than welcome to them!

Huhh? Those are plastic covers over steel wheels, 'manhole covers' refer to the 15 hole alloy wheels as seen on the 201 behind the 123.

really??, I've always been under the assumption that any wheel /cover with a disc-like appearance is referred to as a manhole cover. and those look more like the real manhole cover than a set of 15 hole alloys. But where I come from it's not an MB alloy wheel-specific term. :happy3: Must be an SA thing, like the strange names you lot give to delicatessen items :laughing6: :laughing6:

Seems I'm required to change the plastic "manholes" for the alloy "manholes" as SWMBO wants a little more bling on the plain jane car.

The alloys will come off the blue 190e as it's going to be a parts car. I can't stand the perfumed smell in it, so scrap it is!

Oh! the R12 has all leaked out of the 2.5D already , so it's now in the bad books again .................. :banghead:

Right O, I know where I'll be camping next time I visit Sydney for the mardi gras.
Although not much of a fan of DAB but alas the great Pilsner beers of Germany should be consumed fresh and not after months in a container.
The lagers seem to do better with long distance travel but I am banned from them, as I drink too many too quick, leading to wobbly boot syndrome.
Actually the nanny state tried to ban it http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/sout ... 5952277553 although for the moment they are focused on cheap wine.
Hey I told anyone who would listen that once they gave smokers a big kicking they'll move on to booze, then fat bastard foods.
Big brother will not rest until all we do is work, eat healthy foods, pay taxes and sleep for a prescribed amount of time. Sounds a lot like the fn Nazis, who where right into healthy living amongst other things.

Anyway back to manhole covers, my understanding is that it is a German nickname due to the shape of their manhole covers

Last week I finally picked up the "new" car. By this forum it is actually an older car as it is now on it's 3rd Ozbenz Forum member!

Joe sold me his red 190E 2.6 after he was nice enough to spend heaps of $$$ making it handle like a rat on rails. Last Friday it had a RWC and yesterday it was finally registered in my name but after 20sec of looking at SWMBO gave me the go ahead to get some Euro plates. [IMO standard plates just look WRONG on the front end  :snooty: ]

Here are the pics I took behind my place up Arthurs Seat

BIG thanks to Joe for making this 190E a sensational car to drive and pullup on the brakes like a real high performance car! :occasion5:

Cheers
Andrew

I gotta say, that car still looks awesome. Something about Signal red in afternoon light I think. I remember last time I was at dead horse gap right on dusk I took a picture of the car, and while it was snowing, the car just popped in the dusk light.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did, It's a bloody brilliant car.
I must say I was a tad apprehensive about selling it but-
It's also good to see that the time spent getting it up to an acceptable standard isn't wasted on some p-plater hoon from werribee or frankghanistan.

Happy that it has found a caring home
and no doubt you'll be happy with it for years to come. Of course it doesn't hurt that it happens to Go like the proverbial off a chrome shovel too :occasion5:

A W201 is still a great looking car, especially one with a lower stance such as one with some supension work, a Sportline, a 16 valve, or even a regular series 2 (which rode lower than the series 1) with its lower body cladding. To match these great looks is the driving experience. The roadholding is superb, even by today's standards (especially in something like my Sportline), and at the same time they can allow the driver to cover vast distances in comfort just like a bigger Benz.

I still enjoy my 2.3 Sportline as my daily driver and have no desire to replace it. Must admit, being a 5 speed manual along with the Sportline chassis enhancements and leather interior makes it appealing. Had it not been for these unique features in mine I could have been tempted by Joe's 2.6 (oh, and the fact that I am already slowly doing the spadework with SWMBO to allow me to purchase something else a bit special in the W201 range, all without having to part with anything else). The 6 cylinder would be nice (especially with a "sleeper" 3 litre conversion) although I wouldn't trade anything with an auto for my manual and the torquey 2.3 four works well with the manual.

So Andrew, you have the 16 valve body kit, the suspension, the wheels and the big brakes. When does a 3 litre M103 (or even an M104) get dropped in there?

Wow, what a beautiful looking car in red and probably one of the best I've seen. The body kit and the wheels makes the car look absolutely perfect. I wish I knew it was for sale. Like they say "you snooze, you lose". Joe you've done a great job. I'd love to get my hands on a 16V body kit for mine but I don't like my chances.

Andrew I hope you enjoy your new ride.

I'd love to see some photos of the interior and engine bay.
