Rotor Button and Dizzy cap W201

Post by Tassie » Thu 08 Oct, 2015 7:51 pm

Gday fellow W201 owners.

Has any smart cookie out there worked out if any other 4 cyl cars made use the same rotor button and Dizzy cap?
Just got my 86 190E home after getting rego, and found it hard to start when warm, so I popped the Dizzy cap below and behold its stuffed, I slipped into the local super cheap to see if I could match something up, they had 5 caps in store USELESS!!!

Anyway is there another one that will fit and work from another more popular car? old Datsun, toyota or something like it? Or am I going to be paying $97 off ebay for one? thats not gold hahah

Time for a drink

Hi Tassie,
I had a 190e for 6 years until just recently "graduating" to a 300E 2.6. And have driven old Mercs for 44 years. Cardinal rule is this. Keep it serviced according to schedule with genuine or good quality OEM spare parts and ONLY ever use recommended oils, brake fluid, coolant etc.

This is not Mercedes snobbery. If you attempt what you are suggesting (and I doubt that you could find anything) you will have an unreliable car and you will eventually totally stuff it up and it will grind to a halt. Even before it reaches that end it will be worthless; certainly no one who knows anything about these cars will touch it.

I almost walked away from the 300E due to non- standard ignition leads. (evidence of an "I don't know, I don't care attitude." ) I only relented when I found out the owner had just done the job and they hadn't been on long enough to affect the rest of the ignition / engine management system. After negotiating the deal to include a missed service, I insisted on a $200 cut to cover the cost of a new set of genuine Behr leads.

I've had an incredible run from all my cars. I've had reliable and enjoyable motoring for 4 decades. Ownership of these cars has meant higher maintenance costs than the average but that is more than offset by cheap purchase prices, minimal to no depreciation and cheap insurance.

Hi Tassie,
I posted the above before I had read your other posts re wholesale modifications, engine swaps etc. Not my cup of tea, but good luck to you as you get stuck in. Makes what I said, in your case, pretty lame even though it stands as good advice generally. Too many good cars fall into the hands of those who take them on without knowing what they are doing, who then fiddle around the edges, tart them up and then try and flog them off when they get tired of them. Your proposed course is different entirely.

The cap is exclusively for the MB engines. However the rotor fits a wide range of engines including Alfa, Audi, Hyundai,Saab,Seat and VW.

Thanks all, got a second hand but almost new cap and button.
Fuel accumulator is next, a coat of paint and exhaust and its on the side of the road for sale.

Not my cup of tea these cars. Ill be putting some new tires on my SS Thunder soon I think, I miss the power of the LS4 and the sound of that 3 inch exhaust.
