Used C63 AMG buying advice

Post by Greg in Oz » Sat 04 Jun, 2016 4:27 pm

One of my brothers is keen to buy a used W204 C63 from around 2009 or 2010. My knowledge is mainly about older (1960s to 1990s) MBs so I can't offer him much advice other than the obvious when buying a used car. What should we especially look out for in these?

We went out and looked at a silver 2010 model with 39k on the clock earlier today although the short breaks in the wet weather made it difficult to have a good look at it. The wet roads also made for an "interesting" test drive. The car had only just arrived at the stealership and had not been detailed. I was surprised that they would attempt to sell a car like that without detailing it and I was also surprised to see wear on the black leather of the backrest bolster of the driver's seat for so few kilometres traveled.

Anyway, I would appreciate any buying advice or leads on a good car. My brother would prefer to get one in a colour other than silver as so many of them are silver and so is his current car.

Even sourcing an AMG vehicle from a stealership I would be taking it to an independent MB specialist to get an estimate of when the consumables are due, to have the codes read and to check every last electronic detail. Also make sure any or all recalls have been done.

You have delicately hinted to your brother on the premium prices you need to pay for consumables for AMG vehicles?

Greg,

as I mentioned often before: a REALLY deep pocket ... I drove mine now from 0 to 188.000 kms ... I think I know what I'm talking about.

Pertains to W204's in general.

A few good points and a lot on "what to watch out for".
Under "recalls" section, it seems MB USA is recalling certain models, including the C63.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I pointed out to my brother the cost of replacing any AMG specific parts and he is also aware of the need for a thorough inspection of any potential purchase.

Due to a lack of potential purchases in colours other than silver (the colour of his current car) and possibly the cost of ownership, it appears he may be going off the idea of buying a C63 and maybe buying a Golf R (or maybe a GTI) instead which would be a pity given that he drives a Golf now. I was hoping he would go for the C63. If it stands the test of time maybe I could buy it from him when he has finished with it

Anyway, if anyone has anything more to contribute, please do so.

Greg,

the problem with AMG's these days is, that you have no idea what the previous owner did with it. I always drove mine very carefully, waited patiently until the oil had proper temperature and mainly drove long distances. If it is the case in Oz - like I saw a few times - that you use it just to show off and accelerate like an idiot, wear and tear could be worse.

Surprisingly - also for MB - my rear tyres last around 20.000 kms and the front brake discs had to be changed only at 50/100/150.000kms. Even though, inspections and repair sum up to 25.000 Euros. My dealer told me, that he has AMG customers, whose tyres are totally down after 7.000 kms and brake discs at the front are "normal" at 20.000 kms.

As I am the only customer here who a) uses the AMG as a daily driver and b) has so many kms on it, I had an oil analysis done just two months ago: perfect values, no metal parts in it, nearly as new. So I will continue to drive it and build my own "vintage car" one day. It's definitely the last of its kind.

Regards
Thomas

Btw. I'm pretty sure, if he buys a Golf R he will have the same problems ...

I have a Liquid Yellow RS265 Trophy Megane for sale soon... beats the pants off a Golf, and you know the car and how well it's maintained.

It is due for a new set of Pilot Super sports in about 1000km. next service is over 7000km away. Everything is sweet. 172.2kW @ front wheels on a hot day vehicle completely standard except for the K&N filter.

I love it, and loathe to dispose of it, but as you know since Natalie cannot drive anymore, It sits here and gets used rarely. But at least that means it gets a proper warm-up before the long highway drives I take it on.

Bugger that golf R. it's god-awful. has terrible steering feedback, no personality and let's face it..... an emissions 'issue' built-in. :D

Joe, your (or should I say Nat's) Megane RS265 certainly impressed me. There is however an aspect of the C63 (apart from its exhaust note) which I like and I suspect may well be what will convince my brother to buy one. Torque. 600Nm of it from low in the rev range.

It's a similar situation with my 500SLC. It's not hugely powerful and only a little faster from a standstill to 100km/h or to 400m than my 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. The torque characteristic of the V8 (even with only a little over two-thirds of the C63's) is however what makes it so much fun to drive. The Cosworth handles better and has manual transmission (which I prefer) however, it is when you realise that the 500SLC gets from a standstill to 30km/h in half the time of the Cosworth that you appreciate why it feels so much more powerful.

Then there is that V8 exhaust note. I know that is something which attracted my brother to the C63 in the first place. I also suspect the C63 may be an easier car to live with as a daily driver than hot hatches such as the Megane RS265, Golf R or even an A45 AMG.

The search is over. My brother called by briefly today to show me what he bought. It's a very well cared for 2008 C63 AMG with full dealer service history for the 53,000km it has traveled. A pre-purchase inspection report described it as pretty much perfect and my brother is very happy.

Good news for brother P, Greg. I hope he got them to throw in a set of roof racks as that surf board is going to look pretty funny sticking out the back window :laughing5:

For what its worth W204 M156 can have some problems which are expensive to fix but worthwhile:

1) Wear of camshaft lobes into the top of the valve lifters. This will happen eventually on high mileage cars and regular oil servicing is the key to prevent it so buy a car with books.
2) Camshaft adjuster pins wearing and wearing the adjusters and the adjusters failing. This will happen eventually on high mileage cars and regular oil servicing is the key to prevent it so buy a car with books.
3) Cylinder head bolts rusting at the head, failing and letting water into the head. Only can happen on the earlier models 2008-mid 2010. Unlikely but has happened in some Aussie cars. The early bolts were a poor design.

None of this can be checked prepurchase as it needs the cylinder covers pulled but choose a car with the services done when needed and should be ok.

Otherwise a gem of a thirsty car.
