Yes,If it's over 30 years old and you have the import approval certificate. You have to submit the car for a Mod plate too. If it's a V8 it will cost more than a grand a year for Rego.

Oh, I thought that last one may have been referring to certain overly "blinged" examples.

We have some dumb things in NSW when it comes to rules, regulations and charges when it come to cars and roads, but at least our registration costs are based on the vehicle weight (which is presumably what damages roads). I have never understood why Queensland rego costs are based on the number of cylinders. Why should a C-Class with a V8 cost significantly more than the same car with a 4 cylinder? Because of this system, my inlaws in Queensland have always driven MBs with 4 cylinder engines. I can remember when I first met my wife to be and would drive my 350SLC to Queensland. All her family members would always question how I could afford the rego costs on a V8. I would have to explain that in NSW it is based simply on weight. The rego on my V8 350SLC costs the same as our 6 cylinder 300TE. My 4 cylinder 190E cost a little less but only because it's lighter, not because of fewer cylinders. My Mini costs less again because it falls into an even cheaper weight tax bracket.

John, You can buy the plate and you own it. you also have possession of it. you don't have to affix it to a car.

I have 3 plate sets which are in my cupboard, not affixed. somehow knowing noone else can have amg124 keeps me amused... :laughing6: :laughing6:

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the "Spotted" topic.

Spotted this SLC with an appropriate plate a short distance from home late last night. Just as well I snapped some photos as it had gone today. I haven't seen it before although it was parked in front of the same house as where I have seen (from memory) a W111 3.5 coupe parked on a previous occasion. I suspect the residents have a friend who is an MB enthusiast. These photos don't show the real condition. That was dew on the car and it actually apeared to be fairly tidy (even the wheels and under the arches looked clean). Anyone know the car or its owner?

The owner of this car lives around the corner from me. 10 years or so ago he did have an AMG car on which these plates were originally placed. The owner has had two or three Benz's since then (all black) and has moved the plates as he has updated the cars.

Update.

Seen at my local supermarket

These plates are now on a brand new Black CL6.3 AMG

While I was driving out, Mr Rino Grollo was just pulling in with his Light Green Metallic W140 600SEL which he owned since new.
His Plates : BOO OOO

Why is it that my P&S always seems to have a flat battery when I need it? :wall:

And as you probably have guessed. The supermarket is not Aldi.

My 230S has 'RBS230' - in a replica German number plate shape which looks much nicer on the rear than the standard sized SA plate.
rbs230.JPG
The red Finnie already had the nsw plate 'Fin190' on it when I bought it and that combination was available here in SA so I decided to keep it the same - plus the SA personalised plates come in 7 different background colours - the maroon background was an almost perfect match for DB516 medium red!

Image

Image

I really wanted 'SLO 200' for the white 200D but it's already taken, it's probably on a Nissan 200SX somewhere.... maybe I could go for SLO 110? :laughing6:

Just out of curiosity I've noticed that the personalised plate combinations WDB 111, WDB 116, WDB 123, WDB 201 and WDB210 are available in SA, can't believe someone hasn't snapped them up, same with "SEL280".

Oh, and there is an SA club member selling a whole bunch of personalised plates atm - surprised no one has jumped on these yet, especially for that 'AMG' plate:

All a bit sad really. I mean who do these guys think they are?
If anyone was presumably a 'real' gangster, or indeed pimp, it would be unwise to advertise such on their car.
So, what do we have here, 'pretend' gangsters and pimps?
Why?
Who, apart from some retarded teenager with his hat on backwards, would consider that in any way cool, or wicked, or whatever the appropraote adjective?
And to pay the licensing authority for the privelege, (well it costs here in NSW so I am guessing other states charge a fee too) is how much?

Get over it kids.

Back in the 70's when these things first appeared in the US i thought they pretty good, but 40 years later I tend to agree. The cost of the plates in no way reflects any intrinsic value. I had thought of putting one on my 6.3 ...grandad was already taken, besides I am not a grandad .. :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

I like numberplates, it is interesting to see the different types from different states and countries and the different systems they use for numbering. Cars often look much better with "custom" or "personalised" plates and sometimes they are quite clever.

I don't like the look of the current standard plates in Queensland and they dont look good on any old Benz. My favourite plates are the original Queensland Q- plates issued 1921-1955 and the classic black and white 3 letter- 3 number N-, P-, O- plates issued 1955- 1977 (in the order N, P, O).

These plates are available to be re-issued as "custom" plates you can buy in the combination of your choice if it is available, but they are old standard rego numbers that have been issued before and cancelled and are available again. I have 3 of these plates in combos that bear relation to my name. I like them because they make my cars look much nicer than when they wear the standard, new, maroon on white plates and they are "personalised" but dont have the wanker factor because they are actually standard-issue classic plates that were once on an old Holden or Ford of the late 60s and early 70s. Maybe a Cortina or Capri :glasses2:

I think old cars and old plates go together as they both have a history of their own. Unless an old Benz has its original rego plate still on it from new, black and white or the green and white then I always prefer to put my own plates on them.

Custom Number Plates

Post by ansteadeh » Sat 24 Nov, 2012 11:11 am

Agreed. I'll be putting a my original EH B&W plates onto my coupe when it's registered. They have their original patina as well. Ie a few dents where my great-aunt (who owned the EH before me) bumped into a few things! They are 1964 vintage on a 1970 vehicle, but I don't think too many people will know the difference.

What's with these new "stealth" plates available in NSW? - the ones with Black background + dark red letters, or black background + brown letters etc. - utterly illegible at 5 metres! The world is truly going nuts!

The cop cams and the speeding/red light cams will pick them up

Custom Number Plates

Post by Christo C » Sun 23 Nov, 2014 7:25 pm

That's fine if the cops are around - I recently witnessed a near miss on a Pedestrian Crossing - was no way to identify the car and report the offending driver. I was less than 5 metres away with a clear view of the plate. Seen many more similar plates since then.
Do the general public have to carry number plate recognition equipment now?
I doubt these stealth plates have enough contrast for proving anything with most dash cams either!

I have got these coming my way soon off Carl's coupe now residing in VIC
The WA owner of the plates has already signed the transfer paperwork for private plates to switch to my ownership
I think they will be a perfect match for the black 560 coupe

Just out of interest - how much do you think those plates would sell for.

I have some Victorian plates 500-008 - which are for my 1995 SL 500 - I was wondering if members coudl give me an idea on where to sell them (ebay, gumtree, other?) and how much I might be able to reasonably get for them?

The Sydney numeric market is much stronger than Vic. As a guide I would suggest you go to the Shannon's website and look at past VIC auctions where there are a bunch of numeric plates sold each auction. The number of digits ie 2 in NSW is over $100k and is in the low teens a couple of hundred. A 3 is around $80k and sequence ie 100 is worth more than 999 but 888 would be more in demand for our Asian cousins. Form what I remember if they are correct numeric plates they can be upward of $18k in Vic
That should give you a guide and possibly an outlet.
Hope that helps and GLWS.

I think that the letters MB or BNZ and model number or similar are superfluous as one can see that it is a Mercedes Benz and the model number is shown on the trunk. I always look for the YEAR on personalised plates on older cars. An old Chevy drives by and the numbers "1955" give me something useful. The alternative of something clever or funny is always good. Names and things like "Mumstaxi" are plain dumb.
I have "QUALITY" on my truck because the focus of my business is on quality, however I am considering putting it on to my W123. Wocha rek'n?

You wont like my widebody plate then - RWB-500 ie. Red Widebody! I respect peoples choices and understand there may be investment value, but i am not the kind of guy to spend big money on plates when i could spend it on a car instead. The plates I have some of are one off $70 'r' and 's' series plates in SA and it is purely that it is the only way to put a plate on the car that looks like it belonged to the period of these cars. On my pagoda I had to replace the old faded plates and at the time would have been given a colourful festival state plate, but if i paid $70 and bought the rights to the plate then i could have the plain original style... coming from the same plate manufacturer of course! The games we have to play!!

I have R series plates on two of my Finnies and personalised plates on another - agree with you Craig that they seem to suit the era and are much better value than the expensive custom plates.

Just out of interest I had a look and the following plate combinations are still available:
SEL350
SEC420
SEL126
RSL107
SSL107
RCE123
RTD300
or STD300 :laughing6:

Or if you wanted to go for the personalized plates, you could have:
WDB111
WDB116
WDB123

So still plenty of options out there for SA classic benz owners.

If you extend your license plate all the way to the passenger's door, you can use the whole VIN :laughing6:
