Preventing Catastrophic V8 Engine Failure

This has been mentioned dozens of times on Ozbenz on the importance of maintaining your V8 and preventing it from imploding.

It is of particular relevance to newbie Mercedes owners who buy a V8 and are unaware of the importance in having the chain, guide rails, chain tensioner etc checked for wear. When we bought our 84 W126 380SEC V8, I was absolutely terrified to drive it much until the motor was checked by our Indy mechanic. Sure enough, the plastic guide rails were turning a coffee colour due to age. So all necessary parts were replaced. Result....peace of mind!
