Diff compatibility

Post by Ivanerrol » Wed 04 Apr, 2018 9:14 pm

A man has asked me a question.

He has 3 W202's.

'97 with 722.6 auto.
'95 with 722.4 auto
Late '96 with a 5 speed manual. 717417. (it's a post eco wiring model)

The '96 manual is in very good condition except for the diff.

His question is : will the diffs from either of those auto's suit his manual?

WIS-EPC printed document.pdf
This was taken on a c280 with all the filters stripped, so there are way too many ratios as you can see.

best thing to do is look at the lower RHS of the diff just below the cover between the bolts. ratio is stamped there.

manual is likely to be 3.07 auto could be 3.46, 3.69 or 3.27. 3.92 is an outside chance.

the 722.4 could be 3.07 or 3.27. Auto and manual respectively (717.404) on 201.034/035/036 evo1 enjoyed these ratios until Evo2 - 3.46

3.46 is too short, as is 3.69.

3.27 is ideal for acceleration, but will lower 1st gear limit.

3.07 is best all around for economy, low highway rpm and still has enough performance in 4th/5th and at motorway overtaking speeds - better in 4th, but all depends on how you drive.

most ratios from the bigger engines are w124. I think the tiny engines got small diff. - part numbers will tell all, as will your mate's VIN if you care to get all 3 of them, we can look it up.

No good news for him here really. I was wrong on all three guesses.

WDB2020182F345476 717.4 is 3.91:1
