Mystery colour... Help!

Post by Twigz » Fri 16 Mar, 2018 5:23 pm

Hi everyone, this is my first post here.

About a month ago, I bought a beautiful W126 280SE. It's only got 130,000 km on the clock and is mechanically perfect, but the paint is quite rough... Faded and peeling clear coat, and a few chips and scratches. I went to my local Auto One to get some touchup paint, but my paint code doesn't match anything in their system. I've ended up having to go to a paint store and getting them to scan the car and mix up some paint that hopefully matches, but I'd really like to know what the factory colour name is. The paint code on the plate is MA669. Googling it hasn't helped.

Just in case this helps, my car seems to be a private import from Malaysia. Not sure if that matters or not.

I really hope someone out there can help me, and I look forward to being a part of this group for many years to come!

Post your VIN.
Then we can help you with it.
Having said that most W126's with white paint come standard. Even released in Malaysia.
You probably have a car with no emission products - which is a good thing.

Unfortunately peeling clear coat requires a complete renewal. No patch ups will sort bit out.

Thanks. My VIN is WDB1260226A172820. I searched it on benzfans and it said my paint code is DB737 - Mercedes-Benz "Classic White"... which doesn't match my DARK BLUE car. The trim and cladding codes match though. But then it says it was manufactured in 2006 in Germany. I'm so confused right now.

Other than that, yep, it's got no emissions control systems, just a plain old M110.98 straight 6. I love the sound of it, I just wish it had a little bit more power.

I've been doing a cut and polish, gradually doing one panel at a time, and the results so far have been very promising. I'm hoping it doesn't require a full respray, but if it comes to that then I guess it'll have to be done.

These cars had plenty of power at the time they were contemporary.
The transmission lets them down a little as they are designed to start in second gear for "conservative drivers" of the era.

In many parts of Asia - at the time - 1980's. vehicles were restricted to engines of 2.8 litres.

In Malaysia, an S class was a millionaires car. In Singapore a 560SEL cost a million Singapore $.

So it is supposed to be white. I wonder when it got resprayed blue then. It's been done properly, with everything out of the car, and there isn't even a speck of white, even under rubber plugs in the engine bay. I really like the current colour, and definitely don't want to bring it back to white. I'll see if I can find a photo.

Geee.
Is the VIN stamped into the firewall? Or is it just on a removable plate?
There where some shenanigans going on between roads authority officials and some illegal importers back in the eighties and nineties. :dontknow:

According to the VIN site you should also have a Brown velour interior. If you have MB tex or leather you have some suspect vehicle.

Does the engine number match up?

The VIN is stamped on the firewall. Not sure about the engine number, I'll have to check that in the morning. The interior is correct though (thank god, I hate old leather).

Mr Twigz,

Despite all the discrepancies, that looks to be a very nice 280SE. That 2.8 motor was carried over from the previous W116 280SE model. They are sluggish on take off as Ivan said, but once up to cruising speed, they go all day.

Before I discovered the magnificent world of the W126 series, I owned a W116 280SE. Like I said, slow on take off, nice on the highway. I never had any trouble from that 2.8 motor nor from the transmission in the 10 years I owned it.

In fact, looking at your photo with the fur lined bonnet adornment.....I can hear that 2.8 PURRING from here!

Cheers,
Kim
