What's the best mercedes you've ever owned/driven ?

Post by aleks001 » Mon 06 Nov, 2017 12:20 pm

I just thought this would be a fun topic. We all have that one car at some point where we regret selling it, I was just wondering what that is for everyone. I have owned many mercs in life but so far my favorite is a w209 2003 CLK320 I'm fixing up as a project, reason being it just drives so beautifully and I think will go up in value one very distant day in the future the car to this day simply looks beautiful. I have to sell it once I'm done as part of a deal I made with the wife and I'm already regretting it :D

Being driven by CraigB up some twisty road called the Corkscrew in the Adelaide Hills in his 500SEC with AMG goodies. I did drive it, but could not do it justice so handed over the wheel to Craig before the gnarly stuff. It was great.
But really, driving any Merc that someone else is paying for (depreciation, rego, fuel, maintenance) is good!

Oddly, not the W211 E63 I am driving at the moment. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it is really not that exciting... I think it is the need to push it to make it excite you, mind you you can drive it all day long like grandma and not even know what it is capable of...

While admittedly I have not driven very many different Mercedes Benzes (6 or 7 total? 4 or 5 different models), I have owned my current pair for 5 years now. As far as overall condition, my W123 is far superior to my W114 coupe. However, when one of those days crops up like today, when I just feel the urge to go for a nice little jaunt in the Southern Vales, more often than not I jump in the coupe. I can't really put my finger on it. The 230E rides really nice, handles well, gets plenty of looks, etc etc etc, but the coupe seems to offer something a little extra. It rides just as smoothly, but differently. Handles just as good, if not better, but once again, it does it differently. The W123 feels "spongier", for lack of a better term. I feel more separated from the road. I suppose many MB owners, especially back in 1981, wanted a more floaty, smoother ride - luxury.
Technology had advanced quite a bit in the 10 years that separated the 230E and the 1971 250CE and I can feel the difference. Personally, I like the earlier feel. More mechanical, more connected to the road, plus some other extra quantity that's hard to explain. It feels classier or something.
I bought the W123 pretty much as it is now and have just maintained and driven/enjoyed it. I realise that doing all the work on the coupe (i.e. rebuilding the engine, suspension work, ignition upgrades, etc) gives me a bit "closeness" and understanding that I'll never feel with the other one.
It's still a work in progress, (eg. body-work and interior) but my 1971 250CE is the best one I've owned (yet?)

I think the problem with powerful cars here is that you just have no where to enjoy them and then your just stuck paying huge fuel bills for no reason. I had a new VF II 6.2L SS commodore from a mate for 24 hours and it honestly is amazingly fun to drive but you quickly realise it is pointless because you just end up idling everywhere you drive. I currently have a BMW with the N52 2.5L and it is just verging on the border of too much power, not that it's that fast but it takes so little effort to exceed the speed limit that you cant enjoy flooring it anywhere really.

I know exactly what you mean I had a w203 and mum had a w202 for some reason the W202 fealt more special, to this day I don't know why it literally felt 20 years behind the W203 but there was just something mechanical/tanky about it that I can't put my finger on.
