Help with a Vin

Post by EdCox » Wed 11 Oct, 2017 8:38 am

Hi all,

Have been a bit quiet lately, as I'm currently living in the UK for work. Despite having a rusty Crayford stored up at home, I couldn't resist the urge and have just about bought at 240TD with a manual box.

The seller claims it's a 5 speed, but I wanted to know if anyone could shed any light on the situation from the attached pics of the vin and option plate. I think it's been imported, possibly from the middle East, but one vin site says it was delivered in Belgium?!

Really all I care about is whether it's a 5 speed or a 4 speed. I'll be back for a month in December, so look forward to some more pictures!!

I checked the options code list none of the ones on that VIN plate refer to 5 speed manual. Doesn't mean that one hasn't been fitted later.

Can you get the seller to post an image of the top of the gear tick?

That "should" give you an idea.

I looked up the EPC and found that it could have the 717400 VB:GL 275A 5 speed manual transmission.
Unfortunately, for the W123 Series, the EPC does not identify if a part is not applicable to the vehicle VIN entered.
If it has the original transmission and it is a 5 speed, it will be the above transmission. This was the only 5 speed manual transmission offered for the W123 series.
There were 3 versions of the 4 speed.
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

'83 W123 300D 325000km (Wife's car Josephine - sold).
'84 W123 300D replaced good OM617 912 with OM617 952 and enjoyed having good acceleration for the first time since first driving a 300D in 2002 - became engine and trans donor for 300CD Turbodiesel conversion. Now parted out.
'86 W124 300D sold (Wife's old car - sold )
'85 W123 300CD, 275 000km (Fatmobile) rebuilt turbodiesel from previous Fatmobile transplanted into 280CE (SOLD)

Thanks. I think we will have to wait until the weekend when my dad throws it through all the gears he can find.

Side question, is it possible to still obtain the data card for these cars from mercedes? That would give me a bit more detail about its origins I would suspect.

Just got off the phone to the seller, who states that it's absolutely, positively a 5 speed.

:wav:

Hopefully there are 5 forward gears to be found on the test drive!

Hi Ed. I've found Classic Centre US pretty helpful with that.

Thanks Dr.

Does this mean it's been converted to RHD at some point as well?

This car seems to have a curious history!
