Re: Who are you?
Welcome to OzBenz Damien.
As you're engaging in a transplant for your MB, be careful where you tread around here.
The traditionists have a a belief that "you can't improve on perfection", even if the product is twenty plus years older or more. Nothing like trying something different if your not out to change the world.
Enjoy the knowledge of the wiser ones, that's not me by the way.
Regards,
Giles

Lives: Canberra (Centre of the known universe. No . . . really . . . it is. Quieten down you people up the back from Sydney / Melbourne)
Married: Been there, done that, got the T Shirt. Single.
Occupation: Trying to enjoy life and bringing up my 3 y.o. boy proper like.
Employment: Senior Policy Officer, Motor Trades Association of Australia.
Current Car: 1997 W202 C240T
Other Cars: Fiat X1-9 ‘club racer’; Fiat 132 (ex-Italian Consul General) (Sad, I know)
Previous Cars: Fiats 125, 124, 124CC, 132, 2300. Triumphs TR7, TR7 V8. Geminis by three (Rally cars). BMWs 318 Ti, E21 318. Hondas Civic, Prelude.
Dream Car (money no object): 2009 AMG DTM C Klasse (for local track days)
Dream Car (realistic): Vito to tow the above, C63 AMG, 500E? the F1 Safety Car, the F1 Medical Response Cars (drool . . . are they just the hottest sleepers?).
Rooly Dream Car (fantasy land): I have always wanted a WRC car – a current C4 would do – painted white; no badges; darkest tint permissible (so you can’t see the cage); tarmac spec. It’s sole use would be to bait ‘doof doof’ WRXs and the like at traffic lights on lazy Saturday evenings. (My . . . how irresponsible). I s’pose the C63 could do that just as well.
Interests: Motor sport engineering (suspensions and chassis mainly); driving; road safety; rallying (tar babies . . . pfft . . . they’re all soft. I will watch roundy roudy all day under duress if I really have to, though); electoral behaviour; watches; stuff; exercise science (I used to be an AIS satellite coach for a sport that I no longer speak to); stuff; military history; things; other stuff and things.

Re: Who are you?lonerida !
Real name Don and my age is 71 , "lonerida" because i also ride a Beemer RS 1100 ! merc don't make a bike ! i have just purchased a 1990 300 SL convertible, most are 500's which is why it it is hard to find listings.
I live in Tasmania and can't find anyone who has experience with the electric hood, which leaks oil from both sides of the top of the windscreen and is now out of oil.
i have located the oil reservoir but as yet have not determined the type of oil used, i am informed that the leaking from the windscreen area is acommon problem, does anyone have any hints, also i would like to purchase a workshop manual.
Glad to have made the aquaintence of fellow Merc lovers.
Ciao for now
Don

I like my car. Sure, if I had the money I woudl have bought a 911, but since having bought the Merc, I have ever so slightly gone crazy and fallen in love. Beauty to drive. Gimme a million dollars and I would restore her to the max. For now, I want to keep her running for as long as possible.

Time for an update (3 years later, sadly not much has changed):
Real name: Nathan
Age: 28
Sex: Male
Benz: 1969 W114 250, 1983 W460 300GD, 1989 W124 300E
Occupation: Plant Engineer
Location: NSW Snowy Mountains, Tumut
Interests other than Mercedes: House/Wife/Dog (not necessarily in that order)
Dream Car, unlimited budget: Brabus SV12
Dream Car that I have a chance of owning: W463 G320 CDI (new Diesel G-wagen)
I work for a packaging and recycling company in Tumut NSW, looking after the operation and maintenance of their boilers, steam turbines and utilities. I am a qualified BA/TO and Class 1 Power Engineer. My employer has also generously subsidised our day-to-day vehicle (a Land Rover), it is a comforting thought that my Mercedes-Benz are now a hobby more than a necessity.
I am lucky enough to be married to a Merc' nut and with no kids (yet) my time is divided between my work, my family, friends and travelling. I am Currently the NSW rep for the Australian Gelandewagen Owners Association.

Re: Who are you?
James
Age: 49.999999999999...
Married to my beloved Joanne, (who does get annoyed at times with what she calls "My German Girlfriend" in the garage!). Two lovely little girls Georgia(8) and Kathryn(6).
Moved to Aus on a lateral recruitment with Army, from Springbok land. Was with the SA Air Force, now with Army Aviation. Was instructing on Kiowa choppers but now involved with flight safety, hence move to Canberra to DDAAFS (Dept Defence Air Force & Aviation Flight Safety).
When moved from SA, left behind a near concourse 230S Fintail, a 220SE Fintail and a 220Seb Coupe. Yes as you can see, grown men do cry!!
Was a Brit sports car enthusiast until I bought a 67 230S Fintail (round headlights-straight 6 motor). After getting to know it, drive it and working on it, fell in love with the classic looks, brilliant engineering and as a result of the engineering, always came away smiling after spending spanner time.
Got hold of my 67 250S from Adelaid. Car was grubby but was totally original and unmolested (confession: Am an "originality" freak!). Had original man' cert' and from the books and servicings (all the way back to 67), seems to have been a one owner car. Was drivable and fully functional, but tired and dirty engine bay, largely from blow by oil which coated everything in a dust magnet oil layer.
After two years sitting in garage, finally getting stuck in! So far so good.(See "Car Pics" Post).
Am a Fintail fan, but have to admit the W108 has grown on me. Undeniably elegant and the definitive "timeless" design? The other thing about the early 108's that I like is the slightly more classic look of the hubcap-trim ring arrangement and the fact that the interior and mechanics are uncomplex (it's a Fintail under the skin).
Dream car I may one day own: Any 60's Coupe model, (elegance personified). A reasonably clean, mechanically sound Fintail, which I can clean up.
Dream car: Any 60's Cabriolet or Pagoda.
The best there is: For sheer passion and beauty, top dog for me is the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO.
Other Interests: World war 2 aircraft, I know a lot of useless information about the Spitfire (talk about elegant design!). Building plastic scale models of WW2 aircraft.
Dreams: Would love to tackle a homebuilt aircraft kit one day......

Re: Who are you?

Real Name: Warren Wilson

Age: 60 something.
Marital Status: Married over 20 yrs - my wife is an angel.

Location: South Coast NSW (in the bush - Jervis Bay area).
Occupation: Retired Army officer (42 years).
Interests other than Mercedes: Scuba diving, photography (particularly wildlife) and travelling o'seas to photograph things. Was very keen road cyclist until 2009 when I suffered a stroke. No more cycling though I stay up to date on cycling stuff. Always serviced and maintained my own cars but now reduced to nibbling around the edges. Although serious physical work is not possible anymore, I can still dream. I had a '57 Customline as a young bloke and always planned to rebuild one as a project. That regrettably now can't happen either though again I remain very interested in this stuff.
Current Merc: Only ever had one which I bought recently. A 1999 W210 E Class Elegance - Travatine paint & cream leather. My wife bought a new VW Golf so I sold my old Falcon and started to look for something other than a run-of-the - mill vehicle that we could drive around in style to coffee etc.

Dream Car - Unlimited Funds: Probably a Bentley Turbo sporty type thing or any one of those impossibly expensive European eco friendly thingys with unpronounceable names that invoke images of charging bulls or prancing stallions. After a day or two, my wife would quite rightly sigh and say

Dream Car - Possible in the Future: I absolutely love the look of the CLKs, particularly the earlier ones. There must be an immaculate, low mileage one hidden somewhere out there. We would polish up the headlights then live happily ever after.

Thanks - hope I haven't wasted too much of your time!
Regards

Ok, this is for Warren
and others who may be interested!
Real name: Adam
Age: 42
Sex: male
Marital status: Divorced plus 3 1/2 y.o. son
Benz: 1997 W210 E320 Avantgarde Green/ Black - the best car I have owned to date! 1966 W108 250S Graphite Grey - rusty heap to be parted. 1966 W108 250S Abrabian Grey project...., 1967 W108 250S White Bash car
Occupation: Building designer, engineering tech
Location: Margate- suburb of Hobart
Interests other than Mercedes: Car and motor bike racing (participating in years gone by - hope to make a return soon...) F1 and LeMans as ones to watch now and moto GP, architecture, rare and unusal plants (palm trees and cycads), photography, Porsche
Dream Car, unlimited budget: Porsche 959, Carrera GT, 906/ 908/ 910/ 956/ 962/ 961, 911 turbo (plus many more Porsche), Ferrari 250 GT swb, Ford GT 40, Mercedes SL190, SLS, SL Black series, W210 E55, C216, MB list a work in progress.....
Dream Car that I have a chance of owning: Porsche 911, 928, Mercedes E55, C216 plus many more depending on the day of the week!
I have been a Ford man for most of my life - started with XP Falcons - coupe and sedans, XR fairmont, then got stuck in a habit of having late model near new stuff - ZL Fairlane (loved that car), ED wagon, EL Falcon, AU Falcon then jumped ship to Holden VU ute, good car just bloody uncomfortable to drive! Then did something strange, bought a Subaru Forester for the main reason of that I could fit into it - I am not that short.
Then my thoughts turned to having something that I have always wanted - a nice Euro car - BMW 5 series and MB E class were the front runners and throw in the V8 Audi A8 as well. Could not fit into a 5 series with a sun roof, plus the 528 is gutless! A8 I could not find a good one, even looked at an Audi A4 and 3 series (too small!) so the W210 E320 it was (have loved the shape since they were new, especially the E55!!) - and the rest, as they say, is history!
Heck, I have babbled on (sick day!)
Anyway, that's me

Re: Who are you?
Adam - I feel your pain not fitting into some cars, I'm 203cm (6ft8"). Another excuse (not that I need one) to drive old Mercedes - plenty of headroom and the seats slide back a fair bit in the 114 Coupes.
Japanese cars of most makes create an ammusingly uncomfortable situation when I try to fold myself into one. My Mk2 Supra had it's sunroof open whenever it wasn't raining, whether it was cold or not...

Re: Who are you?
Wow, I am not that tall (only 6' 1" or 185cm) although my back is slightly longer than the norm. I also like to sit upright in cars....
You would never fit into my car or anything like it then - my head is about 10mm off the roof!
This is the only car that I have ever driven where I do not put the seat all the way back.... must be built for some long legged freaks
I find it frustrating trying to test drive some cars, can only think what you make of it!!?

You would possibly like parts of our garden. Last time I counted there were around 200 palms and a few cycads as well.

Re: Who are you?
Fortunately I'm not interested in owning modern or non-European cars, so that takes most of the cramped problem cars out of the equation. I have test-driven a few modern Audis and BMW's for my sister though, apart from the snappy performance of the Beemers (was actually very impressed with the acceleration and handling), it was not an enjoyable experience...ANF wrote: I find it frustrating trying to test drive some cars, can only think what you make of it!!?

Who are you?
Picked up the new ML350 today. :):):):):):):):):)
All I can say so far - what a car!
It truly is a terrific car. Drives like dream, the car came with all the driver assist options (cruise/lane/etc). And they work, slowing the car when necessary and then automatically speeding up again when its clear.
I am looking forward to driving to Sydney on the weekend (I wonder if I will have the smile off my face by then).

Real name: Todd (who would have guessed?)
Age: 47
Benz: Sadly, none at the moment, but hoping to remedy that when I finish off a couple of other car/bike projects. I used to own a '63 220S sedan, and will be looking for another W111/W112 sedan in the future. Have also owned a '94 C180 Sport, great little car, but prefer the Heckflosse.
Occupation: Pilot. Served in the RAAF for 12 years and have now been flying commercially for the last 11.5 years.
Location: Maylands - suburban Perth, WA.
Interests, other than Mercedes: I'm into early 60's American super stock cars. Currently have a '63 Ford Galaxie and '63 Dodge 330 Max Wedge, as well as a '65 VW Beetle and a '73 Triumph T150V Trident. When I'm not wrenching on these cars, I try to keep fit and spend time with the family.
Dream car, unlimited budget: 300SEL 6.3, '62 Pontiac Catalina 421SD

Re: Who are you?
Todd, I had a 63 Plymouth Fury hardtop about 14 years ago. One of my favorite cars actaully and it was seriously rapid with a Worked 360 LA engine. One day a really rough looking character told me he had an engine for my Fury. Thinking he meant an old 318 polysphere,i nearly dismissed him but i took the time to ask what sort of engine. He replied he had a 426 max wedge!!. I followed him out to his place(in the bush ) and was surprised to see a ranch style house with a veranda running right around it. Under the veranda, stacked three high were dozens of Chrysler big block engines!!.
He showed me the engine he had,it was sitting on the bottom of the stacks, and one look at the engine number (or lack of it) convinced me it was the real thing. it was complete but in peices . i asked him "how much" and he said he needed a ute and knew i had an old toyota so we did a straight swap.
I had sold the engine within days to a guy in the USA ,and then some time later someone who knew the engine tells me it was the original engine from the Johnny Larsen Ramcharger ...duhh. i have a mate who found another here in Brisbane(bought for $1100 !!!) and put it into a 1970 Plymouth.. complete insanity!!. There really is 460 odd horsepower there.

Re: Who are you?
Cool story Ron, I love hearing about those sorts of finds. Only one day, I wish I was the one doing the finding! I know a guy over here in Perth, who owns an original 63 lightweight Plymouth Belvedere. It was brought over to Australia in 1964 by Ash Marshall and won the 1965 Australian championship. Still has the aluminium front end. Lot of great history in that car.

Re: Who are you?
Thats the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a pic somewhere of it on the wharves with the little stickers everywhere telling the bogans not to lean on it as it will bend. I even saw a pic of it on Bathurst once!!.
it had been raced for one season in the USA before coming to OZ. An old mate here has another genny Max wedge engine just sitting around which he bought on the local trading post.
really cheap too.

Ok, time for me too now.
Real name: Bart
Age: 42
Marital Status: Living happily together with a cute Philipina whom I met in Perth.
Benz: I have got a '60 220S Heckflosse which I bought in Darwin from a Mormon :) because I felt down and needed a project to keep me busy. Made it roadworthy in the MVEC (old Qantas) Hangar in Parap over the course of 4 months. Had it trucked to Adelaide from where I drove it to Melbourne along the great ocean road. Had it later trucked to Perth, where I am residing now. The car is waiting further resto, but has to wait while I finish the house and extension.
Occupation: Mechanical Engineer, working as a Senior Tooling designer for an oil and gas company. Interesting stuff!
I moved to Oz 6 years ago from the Netherlands. Lived in Adelaide, Darwin, Melbourne and now Medina near Perth (for a long time)
Location: Medina - Leafy suburb south of Perth, WA.
Interests: Renovating and extending my 60's weatherboard house that came over as a kit from Austria (Baltic Pine), otherwise a bit of gardening, keeping the neighbours tools and our cars running.
Dream car, unlimited budget: Mercedes Gullwing...
Dream car that I have a chance of owning: A fully restored W111 Coupe

Re: Who are you?
OK Brad, what have you got in the way of little cars? My son (aged 13) is heavily into this, and has a 1/10th scale Traxxas electric slash 4x4, with an aftermarket motor which currently produces 4.5 horsepower, but can produce 6 with the right battery. This might not seem much, but a model T Ford had only 20 hp - so this tiny car goes ridiculously fast. I suspect it would beat my W108 in a straight line.Radio control car building, collecting and racing.
He is constantly pulling it apart and rebuilding everything, often with aftermarket components (new shocks, new motor, new A arms, front and rear diff, new body shell .......)- it costs me a fortune. I'm pretty sure for the money spent on this thing I could have purchased a reasonable W110.

That'd be the formerly known as & still often referred to as Uncle Ben's? I'll have to look out for your car, I can't say I've seen it getting around, I haven't personally spotted anything older than a w114 around here.Brad220S wrote:
