New motor for above categories?

Post by wilsonjermy » Sat 09 May, 2015 6:50 am

Hi all,

I fell in love with the above models, the 190 or 220, I love the shape and the look of them, too bad the new models changed from those designs.
I am not a mechanic and have limited knowledge, I change change the oil and spark plugs and things like that (for the new cars).
My question and like more info on, if I buy a 1956 model, can I fit a newer Merc model engine into it (say a 190 Merc from 2000 upwards or from the A Class models), I'm sure it will require some changes, amendments and an engineer certificate. Anyone thought of this before? has anyone tried it? how much is the estimated cost? any other comments, do you advice to do it? is the new model motor compatible with these 1956 to 1959 models, I mean can the body handles those motors?

thanks a lot,

Anything is possible, it all depends on how much money you want to spend. The biggest issue with later model engine into earlier cars is there reliance on external data like speed sensors to work. Obviously Pontons didn't have ABS so there is no easy fit solution for a wheel sped sensor, but with enough money being thrown at it I would have thought that it could be done.

If you were to look at putting something from the mid 90's in it would be a lot easier as they had less relaance on this sort of technology.
