This caught my eye. Kind of fun, and for dreaming about driving (slowly) around Oz...

(also a link to a T2 van/camper lower down the page after "more from this seller")

imagine trying to pass a truck or road train - you would have no chance
Or going up a hill - you would be down to 60
Would be great with a turbo diesel dropped in

I know that van, it lives just around the corner from me, I see it whenever I visit my sister.
I can check it out for someone if they want.
Had to laugh at the comments at the bottom of the page:

"If you have to be told how cool this is, this is probably not for you. If you are a knuckle-head, please waste someone else's time. "

+1

I would just feel embarrassed every time I drove it - I would be holding everyone up - all of the time. It is OK to drive an old vehicle, but you don't want to piss-off the entire world by doing it.

I think it's great; what a great view of the road.

If I owned it I'd put a sign on the back: "Incredibly Slow, Please Stroll By." Kimrh - this IS the truck.

Sorry Cuisses, I disagree: being so slow also has an upside - it annoys all those tailgaters who get pleasure from nudging other road users faster. For the patient & courteous it only takes 3 seconds to overtake!

Now then gentlemen...are you finished bashing this classic?

My dad had one in the early 90-ties. He converted it from a coach to a campervan, using his shipwright skills.
The factory high roof was a bit buckled; it belonged to a home for the mentally disabled and one of the nurses tried to drive into a car park :bounce:

On one holiday, I drove it all the way from the Netherlands to the south of France.
It only had a 4-speed, and would rev a lot. But I could do 100 km/h easy..

It was noisy, and it would roll a lot in corners. The side door entrance was a big step.
But all together it was ..... kinda cool

He sold it and bought a Peugeot bus with a Turbo Diesel

David,

isn't that the whole point of buying a 200 Diesel (or the enhanced version, 200D automatic)? :laughing6: :laughing6: ... duck and cover

Somebody should buy it at that price it sure would make a cheap Granny Flat and no need to even apply for a building permit, just park it in the yard and rent it out ;)

Hello gents. Interesting reading your comments about my van. I guess my feelings about how cool my van is don't match other people's opinions. I lived in Germany for a little while in the 90s and one of my friends loaned me his 207d to drive around Germany and Czechoslovakia... those fond memories may cloud my judgement. Anyway, this year I've been in and out of Australia b/c I had to go back to USA to help my sister deal with some family issues. Now I'm back (and staying in Oz).

I've been more into French cars and Volvos, and this is my first foray in Mercedes Benz. (Full disclosure: Yep, I'm a septic tank. Yes, I like Volvos.) With Mercedes, I am not a complete nuff-nuff (I've got friends in CA with 80s Turbo Diesel wagons) -- but I am definitely lacking expertise. So I humbly ask:

I've recently got an offer that is almost reasonable, but thinking of family outings, I am starting to hesitate before I sell the old bullet proof (but slow) 207d Campervan. I know it's underpowered (but so are VW Kombi vans). With the K&N and free flowing exhaust, it will go 100K now all day -- but it's a bit loud with the 4 speed trans. (and yes you guys are correct, after 100k, there's not much left). The motor has low mileage on it and is really very tight.

There's a 5 speed 207d trans available on Ebay.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mercedes-Tra ... 233e4d4385

I'm thinking of getting it. In your opinion gents -- am I likely to feel that much difference with the 5 speed trans? I know it's never going to be a hot rod, but I'd like it not to rev so high. I'd still have to paint it, but if it ran quieter on the highway with the 5 speed transmission, I'd probably spend the money, paint it and keep it for a long time. Thoughts? (and thank you) (Also, Lance, feel free to stop by some weekend). Harry

Waste of time, it has a 1:1 5th gear your 4th would be 1:1 also, so it wouldn't help. Looks like something off a 4WD with the 6:1 1st gear. See what you can find at a wreckers, or MB Spares.

Well I think your van is awesome Harry, I would rather push a 207d than drive a wicked camper... :blackeye:

Just get it up to 100 and once the car behind you overtakes then drop back and sit on 85-90 and enjoy the scenery :glasses2:

You might even be able to up the torque / performance by adding some monark injector nozzles, there is also a local diesel enthusiast here in SA who has lots of tips on how to get extra kw out of an OM616 - can give you his details if you want.

Unfortunately engine and gearbox mods won't change the fact that you're trying to slice a very square fronted vehicle through the air. Not sure of any period AMG aero kits for the 207...

And in the interests of full disclosure I'm a seppo b@stard too... happy 4th of July for Saturday!

Thanks David. Thanks Lance. I think we're going to keep, use and enjoy our little chug chug van. I really appreciate your counsel.

you could put a turbo on it to help with the hills. No strain on the engine either.

Ouch, that really hurts....

Poor diesel screaming its head off while only doing 85. I think I hear a bit of big end knock too...

Here's another one, very cheap - could easily be made into a camper

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/maidston ... 1081752400

...but I'd really love one of these to have as a car transporter so I could spend my days ferrying classic MB's all over Australia!
