What's this on lower centre console

Stumbled across this lower centre console trim, but can't determine what the bottom rotary switch is used for?

Hi,
in the 70s, the traffic news could be automatically played on the radio. Germany was divided in 6 zones, where the Becker radios automatically searched for a traffic news station. With this switch, you could select the area of West-(!)-Germany.

P. S.: Alternatively, these days, you could use it as a simple navigation system for SWMBO ... Start with Plan A and if you cannot find the destination, switch to Plan B ...

wow - I'm impressed! I know you were still pretty young in the 70's but do you know if it was very common?

I didn't get picture books, I got Mercedes price lists to read :laughing6: ... I have no idea, if it was common. AFAIK it was only available with the more expensive radios; I cannot remember my father having that in his W114 or W123's ...

When the radio was off or cassette playing, this system stopped it and you could automatically listen to the traffic news. The system was abandonned later with RDS coming up ...

P. S.: This is, why on some radios you have an "ARI" button.
