tappet setting on '78 450 SEL

Post by Pete49 » Mon 25 Jun, 2018 4:31 pm

Hi Mercedes brainiacs I need a bit of advice on setting my tappets. I have looked up via google and Benzworld etc but can't find out how its done. I see a special tool is needed for the top nut but can't budge it at all. Is the bottom nut a lock nut ? Removed the spring clip as instructed but just can't make that top nut move either way.
The right bank is set as per tech data but the left hand side (passenger) is way out except for 2 inlets and 1 exhaust valve which are correct. Any guidance is welcome as the nearest MB dealer or mechanic is in Adelaide 650K round trip) and the car can't drive there.

If they are hydraulic, they don't need setting do they?

You might have a case of bad lifters, read here:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107- ... ators.html

Hydraulic lifters are notorious when you don't replace the oil regularly...
