Ignition key copy

I'm having a hell of a time getting a copy of my only ignition key. Initially I got my local locksmith to copy ignition key and got two copies. First time I tried to use both copies, they failed to turn in barrel. I went back to locksmith today, he confirmed they used an MB style blank key and that both copies were close to identical, but the copies were slightly thinner than original.

Attached is the key provided when I purchased car, don't laugh, it's the once for the brass screw welded (left) and one the right is one of the copies beside it).

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

BTW, I note my original key has "HUF" stamped on it, do I need to order a specific HUF blank key?

I also note the ignition key is different to the other set of original keys I have, as the other keys are very thin. I assume ignition barrel may have been replaced at some time.

Hi.
Following a tip from MBCV members, I went to MB Melbourne today to ask about keys for my 1977 450SE.
It was a very successful trip!
Not only can they produce original keys (not cut copies but originals) the cost is only $25.
Only downside is the process takes 14 business days.
Need VIN/Chassis number and proof of ownership.
All will be well... as long as the ignition/door locks have not been changed over the last 40-odd years!!

In normal circumstances I would agree, but my ignition barrel has been changed over life of car, all the other locks are original. I'm guessing that's why previous owner repaired key, it was simply too hard to copy key.

There can be slight differences of keys from different makers though not usually to cause problems and the key being a bit thinner shouldn't make a difference as its the cuts at the top and bottom that determine whether they work or not. His machine may be slightly out re depth of cut which will cause a problem. I'm a retired locky and the only time I had a problem was if my machine was out. Maybe try anothe place.

Thanks Pete, it's all sorted now. One of the ignition keys I had, had a number stamped on key.

Locksmith then was able to make key based on that code.

Two new keys now work like a treat.
