Can anyone enlighten me about W116 door cards?
One of things I've always loved about the W116 was the cocoon-like feel of the interior, created by the internal crash cell-like door trims. Wonderful.
Years ago I spotted a couple of 280SEs with W108-like door cards, ie without the protruding safety padding. One I inspected was a South African built car, so I thought that might have been a reason. Or maybe early ones had the older style door trim, or there was some overlap to cater for those who couldn't yet come to terms with the newer design's bulk.
Or maybe, as these examples had manual windows, then the trim had to be less intrusive.
Then some months ago on carsales, I spotted a lovely late model 280SE, 1979 I think, that had the safety padded door trims AND manual windows.
And now on carsales again there's a rather pricey (but low mileage) 1978 280SE with the W108-style cards, but with chequered cloth inserts, and ELECTRIC windows.
So I'm confused. Were door card styles a buyer's option?

Re: W116 Door Cards
Is this what you are referring to?
Best info I have is.............
Top photo shows standard (Australian delivery) 280 model doorcard. D - Jet series.
Bottom photo was std doorcard in 350 and 450 models. (Optional for the 280) D Jet series.
When my car was ordered thru Lanes motors Melbourne in 1974, it was offered with the "350"/450" interior option pack, meaning the padded door cards you refer to.
The only part not taken was electric windows.
I believe all K jet models (Australia) had the bulkier padded (bottom photo version).
Pretty much most "grey" imports of the era, (England, Hong Kong, South Africa,) had the std top photo door card, and usually drivers side mirror only.
My 20- cents of info!

Re: W116 Door Cards
mrkozzy is right.
Padded door panels was an option for 280 S/SE up to approx. mid-1978 with cloth or MB-Tex interior. 280 S/SE with leather or velour interior always has padded door panels.
