450 tappet adjustment

Post by Alsclk » Sun 08 Nov, 2015 9:37 am

I am of the thinking that a 1975 D Jet 450 has solid tappets that require manual adjustment rather than hydraulic, would I be correct, thanks in advance for your help, cheers Alan

No, i am pretty sure only the early 350 and earlier 3.5 M116 are solid lifters. Sorry if that is dissapointing and you have some worn hydraulics tapping!

all good, thanks Craig, not tapping as such but sound like a "solid" motor. Recent new timing chain and 4 new injectors thought an adjustment may be worth it but hopefully they're all adjusted......thanks again, Alan

and of course its possible to fit solids - my AMG with the later alloy M117 has solids but i believe that is to do with the lift and shape of the camshaft, but not something you would fit just for the fun of it! But you never know what strange things people might do.

Both M116 and M117 had solid lifters on versions with D-Jet injection. For the 1976 model year onwards they went with K-Jet, breakerless ignition and hydraulic lifters.

Regardless of the individual engine designs, both the solid and hydraulic compensating elements have adjustment(s).

if the engine has hydraulic compensating elements, then the use of a go-no go gauge will determine if any of the lifters are not serviceable.

Secondly, there are shims for both designs, which are used to set the correct clearance on the base circle of the camshafts. The shims sit on top of the valve stem in the retainer.

This information is available in the factory service manuals, and is clear and concise in content.

It is also not uncommon to have a noisy hydraulics after changing a cam and followers etc or winding in a new chain and doing the guides. For some reason, the sound always seems to come from the passenger side rear, which can be confusing, as the rocker covers tend to amplify the noise a bit. Check your cam for scoremarks, as there have been batches in the past with soft cores and once the hardening wears through the lifespan is very limited indeed.
