Becker 754 in the 560SL

Post by nucci » Tue 08 Apr, 2014 3:30 pm

I have a Becker 754 in the 560SL.

It has started to randomly turn on and off. This happens even-though the power to the unit is still connected. To me, it seems related to the voltage somehow. Radio cuts out more often when the lights are turned. At times the radio will work fine for a day or two or a few hours, the next time it's used it will turn on and off randomly and often.

I'd like to retain the original Becker radio, I like the way it looks and i don't want to rewire the car for an aftermarket radio. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Do you think the radio is finally cactus?

Help appreciated.

Things don't last forever, not sure how much it is to refurbish it this may give an indication http://www.soundlabsgroup.com.au/p/Beck ... ette+Radio
You can try a S/H unit I suppose but there is no guarantee it won't crap out again, mine had the display go funky so I put an after market one in, not sure if I still have it and it may be the later one as it came out of a 89 TE but was working good except for some missing pixels on the LCD.

Send it to Leon @ soundlabs if you want to keep the original unit in your car, or go buy an aftermarket headunit... take the opportunity to replace the speakers with new ones. the factory speakers are 6Ω and most aftermarket units require 4Ω speakers, so bear that in mind. oem units are not expensive.

It's easy to remove the radio and connect to 12v (a battery charger will do) and see if it runs OK...turn the volume right down when doing this if no speaker connected...I'd say the radio is OK and there is a connector problem?

I still have the original becker head units from the SL. no intention of using it until the time comes to sell it.
I understand perfectly the desire for originality, but if you're driving any long distance, then a decent aftermarket unit is a huge plus.

maybe replace with an aftermarket unit and refurb the original, and keep it boxed until concours?

I would not recommend using the majority of battery chargers as a power source for any electronic equipment designed for operation with a 12V (or 13.8V) power supply. More often than not, a battery charger will deliver anything but a stable and smooth DC output. Simple units usually deliver a rectified AC output (with voltage peaks of around 18V) and more complex units deliver multi-stage outputs which can be anything from smooth DC to pulses and often won't deliver any output unless connected to a battery. To test automotive electronic equipment, use either a 12V battery or a regulated DC power supply with an output of between 12 and 14V DC.

Check your fuses. These beckers do draw a decent amount of current, if the fuse is corroded at the edges or has been arcing it could be causing a voltage drop and/or restricting current flow to the unit. Would be a good idea to check earth connections to. As greg has suggested it would be a good idea to remove it and hook it up to a decent 5A power supply (or directly to a battery with a fuse) to see if it works fine when out of the car.

Besides the fuse, check the battery connection at the large three bolt terminal block. Often these are corroded causing the exact fault you describe. Nothing wrong with the beckers BTW and i have yet to hear a later type of pioneer etc which works better.

Thank you for all your responses.

I'm getting closer to solving the situation, I checked and replaced all fuses and as a result the radio no longer cuts out. I'll now make sure that the battery terminal connection block is clean and all grounding wire are properly connected.

Cheers and happy easter
