Battery upsize

Post by Djenka018 » Fri 19 Oct, 2018 9:45 pm

Hello ladies/gentlemen,

trying to get a new battery and I'd like to fit the largest it will fit in the RHD design for iron block series (batt in the engine bay on the LHS)

Currently the car has 65Ah/550CCA in size W x H x L 175x175x278
These have now gone up to 72Ah/680CCA

If I go 315mm length I can get 80Ah/730CCA
If I go 190mm height in addition to above it goes to 90Ah/912CCA

Both up-sizes appear as possible...

Has anyone ever gone upsize ?

The W107 model came with a Din66 (Aus delivery) or Din88 battery (USA or China delivery).
If the battery tray is larger than the physical battery size then it will fit. Just make sure that you get the DIN battery, not just any battery that will fit.
Watch for bonnet interference with battery terminals (Not likely with DIN batteries as they have the terminals in a cutout and the terminals do not protrude above the height of the battery case).
Life is a journey, with problems to solve, lessons to learn, but most of all, experiences to enjoy.

Just to follow up,
i went for AC Delco 72Ah/680CCA and I am sure the next size up (315mm long) will not fit in the engine bay battery tray.
It cranks exceptionally well but I always had semi good batteries removed from daily driver so not a proper reference.

there are variations with about 305mm with different height (195ish) but the upgrade benefit does not justify the risk

Interestingly I am just going through the same thing, as the current battery in my 450 SLC seems to have dropped a cell.
I currently have DIN 66 - 63 Amp Hour - 610 CCA battery.
I measured it at apx 275 L x 175 W x 172 H mm.
I am looking at possible replacement battery sizes and noted that whilst the battery tray was unlikely to take anything wider, it would take a bettery about 25 mm longer.
I wasn't keen to increase the height given how close the top will be to the bonnet.
I am thinking I will replace it with another DIN 66 battery.

Hi Djenka
I have had another look at the clearance from the top of my current DIN 66 battery to the underside of the bonnet and suspect it may comfortably accommodate the next size up DIN battery, which is 190 mm high. An extra 18 mm.
I looked up AC Delco catalogue and the specifications of the DIN 72 S57220 AC Delco battery at 72AH 120 680CCA 278 X 175 X 190 H mm.
Is this the battery you fitted to your 450SLC?

I believe that is exact battery I got, I will confirm tomorrow
It was the most of the CCA and Ah for the size.

I may be able to save you a few bucks if you want the same type...

Thanks Djenka
I will be interested to hear what you did buy.
I put a timber packer on top of the battery as a spacer and it seems as if it is below the underside of the bonnet insulation so I think the 190 mm height will work.
Cheers.
