280SL competing in 2014 Sydney to London

Post by Greg in Oz » Sun 13 Apr, 2014 11:43 pm

Pat Cole is competing in the Australian leg (Sydney to Perth) of the 2014 Sydney to London Classic Marathon Rally in his rally-prepared (and modified) 280SL. That amounts to about half the distance of the whole event and is toughest with numerous gravel and dirt special stages. I watched the start of the event at Dawes Point near the southern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Saturday morning. Apart from my interest in car rallying, I am interested in this event as I know several competitors including a couple from the Classic Rally Club (in the white Volvo).

I have posted some photos of Pat's car at the OzBeNZ Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ozbenz/ and more of my photos from the event start can be seen on my page on Facebook.

Some fellow Classic Rally Club members were road closure officials or spectators at some of Saturday's special stages. One club member has posted some great photos of SS1 at http://jbraithwaite.smugmug.com/Motorsp ... s/SLM2014/ and SS2 at http://jbraithwaite.smugmug.com/Motorsp ... M2014-SS2/

These photos are of Pat's car at the start:

Fortunately, at that hour on a Saturday morning the traffic wasn't too bad. From my house the 23km drive via the suburbs to the start location in the city by the harbour took well under 30 minutes as did the return journey home. The rally competitors were the other side of the Blue Mountains near Bathurst for the first special stage by mid morning.

I spoke to Pat Cole's mechanic many years ago about the build of this rally car and he told me they use the 7" x 15" late W126/107 "manhole cover" forged alloys as they are the only wheel strong enough for this application. Earlier forged "Bundt" alloys are also strong but only the 14" versions are commonly available (we all know how rare the genuine forged 7" x 15" versions are). Any other wheel they tried would end up destroyed in short time on the rough conditions. This car competes in both special stage rallies and marathon events (note the LSM-280 plates which were originally fitted for a London to Sydney marathon).

By the way, "Bundts" also have 15 holes

The alloy rims are stronger than the steel rims, that i didn t thought.
Do you know anything about the quality of the aftermarket Bundt rims, i have got some 14 zoll Made in Italy, called Fondmetall.
I don t know if you got my message, that i can send you a pdf file about the stages from the 1977 London Sydney Rally.

MB factory alloys such as "bundts" and "manhole covers" are very strong (and stronger than steel rims) because they are forged rather than cast. They are also very light and would have to be some of the best alloy wheels ever produced. Aftermarket copies and other alloys which have come since by comparison are cast and therefore not nearly as strong. I am now running my AMG (ATS brand) "Penta" alloys on my 500SLC which I use in classic rallies. These events are predominantly tarmac events although we travel over some gravel and tarmac in poor condition. If the roads were much worse I would probably go back to using my "bundts". I only changed to the "Pentas" because I like their appearance and that my "bundts" are the very rare factory 15" x 7" versions (even more rare than "Pentas"). I obviously don't want to damage my "Pentas" but would be even more upset if I damaged my "bundts".

Some good photos of Pat's 280SL from the Facebook link in my previous post. Talk about finding a difficult way to get from Sydney to Perth!

The rally cars have made their way through outback NSW with overnight stops at Parkes, Cobar and then Broken Hill and then on to Renmark in SA last night. This morning they made their way down a special stage along the SA - Vic border before heading west through Murray Bridge. This afternoon's special stages are just east of Gawler and I think tonight's overnight stop is in Tanunda for any of our SA members who would like to catch a look at the rally cars. To see a map of the special stages go to http://app.rallysafe.com.au/Event/PublicView/76 and current (live) locations of each car can be seen by clicking "Car Select" and then "View All Cars".

The Australian legs of the 2014 Sydney to London have finished in Perth and many of the crews and their cars are now onboard aircraft on their way to Turkey for the remainder of the rally. Results following the final Australian stages are available at http://www.transworldhistoricrallying.c ... s30-33.pdf

Some crews were only competing in the Sydney to Perth part of the event. The special stages in Australia were all gravel (and some of it very rough) whereas the European stages are all tarmac. The winner of the John Giddings Memorial Trophy for the Australia only event by quite a margin was Pat and Brad Cole in the mighty 280SL. Those results can be seen at http://www.transworldhistoricrallying.c ... _final.pdf and their final time would have them currently placed in 5th outright position had they been competing in the entire Sydney to London event.

More can be seen at https://www.facebook.com/SydneytoLondon2014 and https://www.facebook.com/ClassicOutbackTrial and a good blog of the event can be found at http://drivingtolondon.blogspot.com.au/

Whilst the 280SL isn't competing in the remainder of the event, I will continue to follow the progress as I have friends from the Classic Rally Club in Car 19 going all the way to London. They have a page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/John-and ... 7169314730
