Rust repair 280SL

Post by p_mcnamara » Thu 29 Aug, 2013 8:08 pm

A friend of mine rang today looking for help. She has a 1964 280SL that has just been refused a rego slip because of structural underbody rust (that's all she could tell me). The car has been outside for a year while they had their house renovated and has not had the attention it deserved! She is a very naughty girl! i offered to take it to Canberra for the big event but she wouldn't let me. She lives North Sydney way and wants a recommendation for a repairer that could do a proper repair job. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Cheers. Pat.

I'm going to be pedantic - 1964, you mean a 230SL? A Pagoda left outside for a year, while a mere house is renovated?
They should have left the house outside instead, at least it wouldn't rust.

Do you literally mean "structural" rust. Not just rotten floor pans? It depends on what is wrong with it, we might have a look at it for her?

I completely agree, there should be a law for those people :laughing6: ... the car should be confiscated and given for free to a car enthusiast ... me for example :laughing6:

Rust repair 280SL

Post by p_mcnamara » Fri 30 Aug, 2013 7:24 am

Thanks for the feedback. I certainly got the year wrong but it is a 280SL. John I have passed on your details. Hopefully the car is not too far gone. Like most MB enthusiasts I don't like to see icons neglected. My father drove a 280SL from Sydney to Darwin in the late 60s to deliver it to its new owner. How's that for having a car run in for you!

You should PM Michel on the forum here and talk to him. I bought a W111 coupe shell from John Green in Sydney and got Michel's bodyman to do a little bit of tidying up and then paint it. They did a great job - you get what you pay for in paint and panel and I told them what I expected, negotiated a price, and they delivered. However, it was not a big panel replacement job. So talk to Michel and see if his guy wants/can do it, otherwise he has contacts in the trade so may be able to pass on a recommendation.
Cheers,

Here is how a pagoda deserves to be repaired and the amount of work required is pretty typical of what you find underneath them .

I wouldn't recomend the outfit I was working with recently.... you wont get this sort of quality with them.
